SINGAPORE: Moody's Investors Service has downgraded SingTel, citing a "weakening" in the company's key financial parameters over the past year.
In response to the downgrade, SingTel said in a statement that its credit rating is still strong as compared to its peers in the global telecommunications industry.
The company added that it will exercise financial discipline in its approach to investments and will do its best to maintain its investment-grade credit rating.
In a statement, Moody's said it downgraded SingTel's senior unsecured ratings by a notch to Aa3 from Aa2, as a result of SingTel's rising absolute debt levels and a perceived propensity of the company toward re-leveraging its balance sheet.
"SingTel's leverage is now embedded at levels viewed as high for the rating level as the company's focus moves away from absolute debt repayment to higher shareholder returns," Moody's analyst Nidhi Dhruv said.
However, Moody's has kept SingTel's rating outlook stable.
The rating agency added that the downgrade was driven by SingTel's fundamental rating factors, and does not reflect any change in its assumption of support from Temasek Holdings.
Temasek, which owns a majority stake in SingTel, currently holds Moody's highest rating of Aaa.
Yesterday, SingTel reported a 3 per cent increase in its first quarter net profit to S$945 million.
