Just watched the evening Chinese news. A female member of the group confirmed that she and her hubby were the original targets but the the leader volunteered himself. What a man!

I am really wondering why singkies are so gungho to want to travel to Egypt around this time - the common joke in the Middle East is based on how lowly Egyptians are viewed through other Arab eyes i.e. they are so pathetic that they can't even organise a revolution. Of course this was not how it was during the days of the height of pan-arabism but post Nasser, Sadaat decimated the intellectual class and society is rotten to the core and strife now.
This is the worse time to travel there given a large degree of chaos and shifting events and they probably will need another 12 months to figure things out if at all - given the strength of the Muslim Brotherhood, clearly not a good time to visit the region generally (although Egypt is technically on the African continent).
P.S. I am not sure how many people know this but there are a sizeable number of singkie Malay/Yemeni Arab Muslims studying in the famous Al-Azhar University - these students were safely evacuated during the early days of the uprising against Mubarak. Although there are also a number of Malay/Yemeni Arab Muslims also studying in Yemen I am unaware whether they were evacuated during the uprising against President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Probably MOFA took a view that if these students were crazy enough to venture to Yemen, they probably had thought of a suitable exit plan.

The real hero of this drama is not vincent.It was actually a member in the group who plucked up the courage to call home and informed family members about the situation at hand.
Authorities at the embassy took over.vincent could have died in vain for his valour if not for that call.Telco network connection was poor but thanks to this person who discreetly acted without fear at the time when attention of the terrorists was distracted,the situation could have spired into madness like the manila hostage crisis.
