SINGAPORE: Seven people were seriously injured when a bus carrying
mostly Singaporean tourists overturned in Western Australia on Sunday.
Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said it will provide all
necessary assistance to the affected Singaporeans. Witnesses said the
bus was rolling down the sand dune backwards when it flipped over.
Local media said most of the 35 people on board were injured.
Emergency services were reported

Several passengers were also unconscious when rescuers arrived, and the
most seriously injured were airlifted by helicopter to hospital.
MFA said its officers are currently in Perth to attend to the affected
Singaporeans. The Singapore High Commission in Canberra is also in
touch with medical authorities in Western Australia attending to the victims.

Sand dune bus rollover leaves up to 20 injured Lucy Rickard
July 25, 2011 - 9:07AM

Thrill-seekers are frequenting Lancelin's dangerous sand dunes every weekend.

Three Singaporean tourists have sustained serious spinal injuries after a four-wheel drive adventure bus rolled in sand dunes near Lancelin late this morning.

Two of the tourists have been airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital, and were expected to arrive at the hospital just after 2.30pm.

Sergeant Gerry Cassidy said the bus carrying 34 passengers rolled in the dunes behind the small coastal town late this morning, and there were a number of injuries among the group.

Advertisement: Story continues below The sudden rollover of the bus, operated by the town's only four-wheel drive bus company Desert Storm Adventures, knocked several people on board unconscious.

A Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokeswoman said that none of the passengers on board the bus were trapped in the vehicle, and that volunteers from Lancelin fire and rescue were first on the scene to assist the injured.

Sergeant Cassidy said the passengers were all tourists from Singapore or Japan, and that while most on board were injured, none of the injuries were considered life threatening.

Volunteers from the Lancelin and Gingin volunteer fire and rescue services arrived at the crash scene before noon, ferrying the injured to a triage point on a Lancelin oval where their injuries were assessed by medical professionals.

Desert Storm Adventures has been running in Lancelin since 1998, and their new bus, which has been in operation for about two years, was believed to have been the one that rolled.

The cause of the rollover is not yet known, however the hectares of rolling dunes are renowned for accidents and crashes, with high winds changes the dune shapes on a daily basis.

The sand dunes surrounding the coastal town have been a constant headache for the Shire of Gingin, who has the responsibility of policing the hectares of rolling dunes.

The off-road vehicle area is popular among quad and motorbike riders, with much of the town's tourists arriving to utilise the sand dunes.

Strong winds can significantly change the sand dunes from day to day, creating huge falls of 10 to 15 metres, and despite signs warning of the huge drop-offs, riders who don't assess the dunes before riding through at high speeds are continually involved in accidents.

Dozens of accidents involving cars, motorbikes and off-road quad bikes occur every year, claiming the lives of several adventurists including the most recent tragic death of a 16-year-old girl in June.

Allana Hancock was killed when her quad bike collided with a motorbike as they both crossed a ridge in the sand dunes.

Shire president George Gifford told WAtoday.com.au at the time that the shire was keen to review the policing laws for the off-road vehicle area, however the state government has been non-responsive to date.

According to the Desert Storm Adventure website and voicemail, the company is closed for a winter break from July 4 to August 15.
