The government does that for your own good because competition is what brings out the best in everyone. That's how things work in the real world.
Without competition, even the most skilled craftsman will not produce his best work. An iron rice bowl invariably results in complacency.

Later on, 5-year and 10-year awards were given out on stage to the various grassroots people.
