Singapore group in talks to buy Newcastle United

ChronicleLive, 9 Jun 2009, by Lee Ryde

NEWCASTLE United owner Mike Ashley is in talks with the Singapore-based company The Profitable Group over a possible sale.

The Chronicle can reveal that the far east strategic global investment group are currently preparing a package to bid for £100million-rated Newcastle with Toon tycoon Ashley officially putting the club up for sale yesterday.

The Profitable Group are understood to have a strong Geordie connection and have ex-Liverpool and England midfield battler Steve McMahon on board as Group Commercial Director.

And it is understood that the group have an ambitious plan to involve the fans at St James’s Park more than ever.

Indeed, the company’s initial blueprint, which was disclosed to the Chronicle today from the far east, claims a successful bid would see them:

:: Plan to turn United into a trust which will give Toon fans a major say in club politics and draw similarities with the Barcelona model in La Liga

:: To appoint Alan Shearer as boss and back the Geordie legend with transfer funds to help the Magpies fight their way out of the Championship

:: Ensure that a footballing figure will be appointed at boardroom level to ensure the series of high profile errors of Mike Ashley era aren’t repeated

:: To increase the capacity of St James’s Park to 60,000

A Profitable Group source told the Chronicle today from Singapore said: "Yes we are interested in buying Newcastle United - and we’re putting together a plan.

"We have spoken with Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias and we are hoping that we can reveal a lot more in the next few days.

"We have people within the company who have strong Geordie roots that stretch more than 40 years.

"And there are people here who have a love for the club - we think that is vital for Newcastle at the moment.

"The plan we have in mind is to get the club on a sound financial footing first and foremost.

"Then we aim to turn the club into a trust.

"It will be very similar to the Barcelona model where fans have a major say on what happens at the club.

"Without any question we see Alan Shearer as the man to manage the team.

"Yes, we have Steve McMahon on board but he is not looking into management.

"He is though a football man and understands the game inside out.

"There is also scope to look at increasing the capacity to 60,000 which is being explored.

"We will look to give Alan money to spend and funds to build his squad - but we have to say now that we are not interested in highly paid players at this moment in time - we won’t be a Chelsea."

The source, who spoke to us before boarding a flight to a business meeting, made it clear Shearer, who has been backed overwhelmingly by the Tyneside public, was their number one choice.

"What this club needs now is somebody who understands the area, understands the people and how this club works.

"Steve McMahon can offer expertise in the background. But Alan is the man we want."

However, the next move is all dependent on the co-operation of Ashley, Llambias and Seymour Pierce investment banker Keith Harris who has been entrusted to sell the club.

The source added: "We are not in the business of misleading people.

"We have put a plan together and it’s one we think that the fans will be behind.

"Newcastle is a fabulous club and we are hoping that we can reveal more in the next few days."

I understand why footballers want to play for big famous clubs.

Steve McMahon has been using his ex-Liverpool player status to great effect in Asia.

I think they are the guys who sell land parcels in UK to "investors"

Wonder how many of them died in this subprime crisis?

The plan sounds jialat to me, though they attempt to paint a rosy picture...

Problem 1: Alan Shearer? He may turn out to be good after some time, but is he the best bet when they badly need to bounce up from relegation immediately?

Problem 2: Steve McMahon on the board. Sounds like there is a high chance he is going to be like dennis wise, providing background expertise that will frustrate the hell of the manager whose demands for player transfers and even tactics get vetoed. Like Kevin Keegan, Shearer has little tolerance of having footballing decisions influenced by the boardroom. Whichever way they put it
(beautifully), Steve McMahon placed there will play this role.

Not optimistic looking at all.

Yes, I also feel that it is a hugh gamble.

No doubt after their relegation, Newcastle will be cheaper to buy and the potential returns once they returned to the premiership would be high. However, I also have doubt over the credential of Alan Shearer as the Manager. Does he has what it takes to bring Newcastle back up in the next season or two?

Secondly, the plan is to let the fans owns the club. However many Newcastle fans are there worldwide? I read somewhere that ever Liverpool was once looking to kick out their American owners with their fans' might but end of the day, the project died off I think.

On the contrary, I think its a good buy & makes potential returns sense.

Has anyone been to St James park before? has anyone seen how close knitted are the toon army? Has anyone wondered that one cannot get any tickets to watch any home games? It's that fanatic!!!!
OK, so what if Newcastle is relegated to the Championship. Ashley has to sell as the fans against him. The sponsors have deserted him. And the players are not playing their hearts for him.
Dennis Wise is just the communicator between Ashley & the previous managers (Keegan & Big Sam) So dont believe in everything you read. The managers cant work well with Ashley, not Wise.
The upside for Newcastle Inc is that, the only way out is UP. They have to start afresh, keep their core players (Taylor, Butt & Nolan etc) and build a team around them. Its not the money they should worry about, its the blardy FANS!!!! Gullit,Souness, Dalglish & Roeder didnt last long. Sir Bobby Robson was cereminiously ejected.
All these pressures to pin the blame by the owners on the managers are none other but created by own their impatient fans.
I guess they have to pull themselves quickly as Championship teams are pretty crappy. Newcastle can & should win all their home games (52,000 capacity) Any small clubs that goes to St James will shudder at the sight & voices of the Toon army.
If Newcastle get off the ground quickly, tickets sales will soar, their residents will have that good-times-again feeling & everything will be lovey dovey again.
When the teams has the crowd behind them, then they'll start playing like a winner.

I hope Newcastle go the way of Leeds, dropping to 3rd Div or League one as they called it now.

Like one of their ex-mgr would say: I will love it!!:p

I think Profitable Group pretend to make offer for Newcastle and in the process hope t gain the financial confidence of its potential investors.

Much cheaper than advertising. Just humtum an offer to buy the team then deny. Just you watch.

Even the way they handle the sale of that damned club is a bloody joke!!:o

Mike Ashley heaped fresh ridicule on Newcastle United yesterday - by putting the Geordies up for sale by email.

The relegated club asked multimillionaires wanting to buy the club to send their bids to [email protected] - and immediately the club was flooded with joke offers from incredulous rival fans.

Newcastle will now be able to claim massive interest in a buyout... as their email box exploded into life.

One Sunderland supporter started the bidding at 10p, it later rose to £1 and others posed as fake sheikhs, as rivals took to ridiculing the men in Fury was growing last night over the treatment of bossin- waiting Alan Shearer.

The legend is desperate to take charge as manager, but has had just one conv e r s ation with managing director Derek Llambias in the last 11 days. Last night Shearer remained in limbo as the club reached a new low. Ashley issued a statement setting his price at £100million to warn off cutprice bidders hoping to get a bargain at £75-80m.

He will write off £150m of his own cash to get a sale. The club statement said: "Interested parties should contact Newcastle United at [email protected] (or Keith Harris at Seymour Pierce) for further details."
