Significance of New Cabinet Line-Up

Couple of observations ;

1) This has to be first time in PAP's history that heads rolled to send a clear signal. 5 Ministers turfed out of which 3 were actually fired. No surprising that they were in charge of portfolios which were not managed well. - Internal security, Housing and Transport. A clear message to the electorate that they are prepared to listen and clear message to political appointees to perform or be fired. Note that none of the 3 had the opportunity to say anything which is truly unprecedented. Don't be surprised that one of them resigns as MP to show his disdain.

2) Here is the inside on why WKS was sacked. Not directly because of Mas Selamat's escape but because he announced that he was setting up an "Independent" Commission of Inquiry but named a deputy sec in his own ministry in it. This was not taken lightly by members of the Alpha Society and raised to PM. It has been downhill since. It was also the reason that Shanmugam was suddenly brought in with 2 months notice out of the blue when Mas Selamat was captured and his version of the escape did not match the commission's findings suggesting massive cover-up. Poor chap had to find a women on the fly to marry to be politically acceptable. He was allowed to contest Bishan as his removal might have led to internal grassroots sabotage. It is also the same GRC that had an MP who was asked to step down in 2006 because of repeated wife battery and another key person stepping down at the next GE was not a good idea.

3) Emeritus because to accord GCT protocol rights and cover MFA functions as GY loss would have been too big a gap for Shanmugam to cover. No ministerial pay though. Mission stipend.

4) By appointing Heng Swee Kiat to MOE, it signals that he is now PM material and will takeover Mindef eventually.

5) Iswaran now takes over as man in charge of the highly secretive Population Secretariat with PMO as cover. This is the dept that manages the population, talent, FT and bringing back of ex-singaporeans and expat Singaporeans back to the country.

6) Lim Swee Say continues to head NTUC which has always been a Minister's portfolio after the departure of Devan Nair.

7) Tharman tale has to be an extraordinary one based on fate. Not in the any scheme associated with the talent stream, it took a court case and he is now a DPM. More to follow.

The big question is who are other than PM will now have control over PA. The word is grassroots are going to face a massive revamp.

There appears to be a shortage of qualified people or rather, loyal obedient people. We thus have minsters holding 2 to 3 portfolios.

1) Find it strange that WKS could have fallen so far. You become DPM because you can, at a moment's notice, replace the PM. So is it a case of poor judgement (reflects badly on PM) or blind loyalty being more important than capability
2) Good idea to put GCT to help out MFA and good that he is not drawing full minister pay.
3) Lim Swee Say - another loyal subordinate in the WKS mold?

I wonder if basic demographic information like number of PR vs citizens can remain secret with more opposition MPs. Afterall how is a minister going to avoid answering these basic demographic info.

I thot Josephine Teo made an inane comment in defense of WKS during the CNA TV forum debate. When WKS was being attacked over the MSK affair and wasnt punished or asked to step down, she had said, " Yes, but was it a fatal mistake?".

For that, I dont think she shld be up there as an MOS.

When you look carefully at the Cabinet lineup, the only new faces are Heng, Chan and Iswaran. And if you look at who are possibly in the Inner Circle, it's basically the same jokers.

The ingredients are the same, the rojak will still be the same. Or no matter how you shuffle the deck, it is still the same cards. talk abt groupthink.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of an event, Mr Lui said he feels sad to be leaving the Information, Communication and the Arts Ministry after three years.

On transport, he said Singapore has not felt the full benefits of programmes implemented by the Transport Minister, Mr Lim.

This is because rail and road projects take time to materialise.

"There is an opportunity and a holding cost associated with building ahead of demand, but there is a social cost associated with not building in time to meet the demand. One of the things we can review is how we can find a better matching, particularly for the land transport, recognising that in many of the programmes, it's really a long gestation period," said Mr Lui.

He said it will be necessary to review existing policies in the system.

"Going into transport, I will have a lot to learn but I also think that from a philosophical approach, we may need to review some of the mindsets that we have held over the long term in the past."

This guy is a walking disaster. He should not be a cabinet minister. I am not sure how good he is as a bureaucratic solutions provider. He is not politician material.

One brief walk into a private condo estate in 5 years, and he had to antagonise the MC Manager and then quickly made a police report to cover his ass.

What an ashole! Really a walking disaster. If he cant even walk peacefully, how the hell is he going to resolve our transport problems?

If the IMF offers Tharm the position (and that is a big if), they have to go thru the PMO first, its protocol. Loong can quietly tell them to fuck off, and u and I would never know.

You got a point there but he's sitting as chairman in the IMFC. Anyway he'd dismissed the rumors here

You are here again to report anything that HAS ALREADY HAPPENED.. You make a good reporter. But try not to forecast, it sucks.. didn't you say SDP is a shit party? so what happened now?
Please tone down your "what you think and expect others to think the same too" behavior. Trying hard to hide such behavior in your usual news report? People called that sublime advertising.

oops, that should be sublime " expect others to think the same and follow what you say " behavior.

For that, I dont think she shld be up there as an MOS.

She is just a flower vase. In the same CNA programmme, all she did was to assent to everything that Tharman said and then when came to her turn to 'summarise' the PAP side, she spewed out (undoubtedly written by someone) something about the continuing Singapore story. Her lack of intellectual competence is easily confirmed by the fact that she almost said nothing else but was often caught on camera nodding like a porlampar.

With due respect, I don't think she's even cut out to be an MP! She is the quintessential yesman who got promoted more by default than on merit!
