Should Taxis be used to alleviate the overcrowding in MRT and buses?

During non peak hours, most of the taxis are cruising around without
passenger.
Don't you think it is a waste of rideable space and gasoline?
Should all the additional charges and COE be removed to make taxis affordable?
Is the government only interested at the bottom line at expense of commuters?
Should they revamp the whole transport system to make taxis a big car-pool to solve the overcrowding problems.

ok with removing the surcharges and erp, just as long as they dun let PRs drive a taxi. but frankly, i see that LTA will let PRs drive taxis to curb the shortage in time to come.

I agree with the removal of COE. Lumping taxis and private cars for the same catergory of COE is ridiculous. The government can easily control the taxi population by the issue of licence to the taxi operator.

COE for taxi is just to make extra money for the government.

Guys, get used to the crowds.

Sg is a modern dynamic cosmopolitan city. All cities are crowded. Getting around without these MRTs and buses would be even worse.

What needs to be improved is this society's level of civic consciousness. With the majority of beings here comprising, Ah Bengs, Ah Tiongs, Ah Nehs and Ah Mats - good luck.

Cheers!

taxi is not the solution to solve overcrowding on MRT's.
They need to provide more trains nearer the town centres, where many cannot board trains because of overcrowding.

with erp charges, 35% surcharge during peak hours and fuel surcharges on top of an increased starting fare i doubt taxis will be a viable alternative.

All city is the same problem with overcrowded public transport during peak hour . Human mindset never change.
There are few simple solution. But need human to co-operataion
1. Segregate start working hour ( some 7am~ 11am have 4 different hour to start work). No cost added
2. Find work near to house/move to house near work place. Walking distance/cycle less than 5km.
3. Try to share transport eg. car/taxi/motorbike/........

Others we need proper planing by transport company and town planner.
1. How to plan housing nea work place
2. Planing public transport route like bus and planing MRT route before built.
3. Plan road properly before built.
4. Traffic light timing plan carefully.

It is not that simple.

Sgns are dependant on their maids.
Growing up with maids, Sgns generally will not make good service personnel.
Sgn engineers can't even mix cement, who's gonna do masonry in construction?
Sgn engineers can'r even tune a motorcycle, who's gonna service their cars?
It is very clear that Sgns need the foreigners
In developed countries, tertiary level students work as waiters, cashiers, ushers, sercurity personnel even at weekends and during school holidays.
Sg students? - Holiday time need papa's money to spend in Hokkaido!!! Or Oz!
It is very clear the Sgns need foreigners. It will take at least two generations to change this - if there is a will.
Sgns who do not conform to the above are the exception rather than the norm.

Cheers!

Singapore is the only city in the world that has COE, ERP charges, CBD, Diesel surcharge, Airport surcharge, Peak Hour charges, Midnight Charges, On Call charges...etc. It makes taxis very expensive to travel in. I took a taxi from City Hall to Lavender and it costs me $7/- including all the charges.
If one takes the MRT it costs less than $1.50 from City Hall, Bugis and Lavender only 2 stations away.
If the new transport minister is sincere in solving the overcrowding in MRTs, he should embark on a study as how taxis can be deployed to ease the load.
All short distance travellers will turn to taxis if the fares are made 'affordable' thus lighten the load on MRT.
With the current pricing, taxis are not fully utilised and a waste of rideable space on the road.

ERP and whatever mother fuck surcharges they will continue to add in. Oxygen surcharges will come in soon. Just by being in the CBD area surcharge will soon be implemented.

There's some sense in what you say, but this begs the question of 'how did things come to this'?

Perhaps it's because incomes are low and costs are high, so both parents must work and need a maid to take care of their children.

Perhaps it's because there is no minimum wage, respect or protection for technical professions, so locals shun away from these jobs and end up with no technical skills.

Perhaps it's due to the lack of strict employment laws, allowing companies to hire anyone they like from any country.

S'pore was already a dynamic city 20 years ago, without the need for cheap foreigners. It doesn't become better by having a loose immigration policy.

All of the above.

Sg already had a headstart in the region when the colonial powers had to let go. It already had infrastructure and a working civil service, public schooling, waterworks, airbases, deep harbour port and all the auxillary services, etc. Then the stop at two policy was implemented and that was the start of the current situation.

Cheers!

Very truth!
You hit the nail. Singaporean from small serve by the maid. Now maid even carry NS bag.
The only way is to increase the maid levey by 100% this year and another 100% next year. Until levey hit min $600/month~$1000/month.
