Never knew that Breadtalk is the standard bearer for affordable bread? Lol.

I believe some folks here will say that they were so poor until they couldn't even afford a slice of local white bread from the loti chia.

Her youth is her wealth. Her self-worth should not be about what brands she could afford.

Last Friday, SOS walked around the foodcourt 3 times and couldn't bear to pay $7-10 for what he likes to eat. In the end, he bought some takeaways for $4.80 from the mall booth and ate on bench. Very nice food.

So I hope she will move on, and not bothered by it.

This smells like some PR stunt paid for by Breadtalk.

Now let's see if that shitty company 'kindly offers' her some free bread or vouchers.

It is disturbing to find that there exists still some insensitive & unkind fellow Singaporeans in our EQUAL society, especially to a mere kid. What she had received as a gift from her dad is indeed a luxury bag. It is made with quality in mind & production, thus a high premium cost than the average made in China poor quality $5 bag.

Such quality bags are mainly made in Europe, often hand made & do have a history. Centuries ago, there were no bag or shoe factories. Royal families & nobles had to make do with pieces of cloth tied to each end as bag, but as they often carry jewels & gold coins, such material tears easily & contents spilling out, or shoe heels easily breaking apart. Thus, the noble families commissioned artists & weavers to produce better quality material for their daily use without breaking apart. Thus the luxury item industry was born, with skills & techniques learnt, passed down from generations to generations, jealousy guarded & only the best among peasants were inducted into such industries.

Although in present times, much production had been outsourced even to China, their quality control remained utmost to the point of fanaticism - no corners cut, no shortcuts, etc. Thus their premium costs.

She need not feel sad that she came from a humble family. Most if not all Singaporeans started out in life just like her family. Even the founder of CK Tang was just a street peddler selling trinkets village to village. One of our great Founding Father - the late Mr. Lee K Y's father was only a watch salesman. NONE of our founding & forefathers came from the nobility, but today, thru their sheer intelligence, efforts, hardwork & sacrifices, they elevated all Singaporeans to the middle class & created opportunities for all & for the more ambitious, intelligent & hardworking to a rewarding life than they could imagine as a kid.

Even the aged today, whom drink $1.20cts kopi-O at neighborhood coffee shop can boast of having assets close to half a million dollar - thru their 3rm HDB flat & CPF, which are inheritance for their families, or if they own bigger flats, would have a million in cash if they sold it & buy a smaller unit as their kids would had grown up & found nests of their own. Not even our neighbors whom own lands & homes costing mere $100k would have the audacity to say the same.

The insignificant nobody me wish the child all the best, & never to look down on oneself, even if others do. As long as one is willing to work hard, smart & honest in Singapore, circumstances WILL change for the better. No one stays poor in our land of opportunity. Societal & taxpayers funds are always ready for every child citizen - from cradle to grave as we are a egalitarian society whom had suffered under poor leadership by others whom robbed us of our potential, have no wish to return back to those dark days again, but to progress for all, leaving none behind. For those who succeeded in life here in Singapore, most 'pay it back' in many ways - philanthropy, civil service tenures, etc.

You are not alone. You are one of us, and we grown up & matured fellow Singaporean citizens whom see far beyond the physical like our visionary forefathers, are your shield....

Instead of buying from both Charles and Keith at the same time, perhaps her dad could've just bought from one of them. And spend just $40 instead of $80.

'Our heart really went out to Zoe': Charles & Keith invites 'luxury bag' TikTok teen to meet its founders, tour brand's headquarters

SINGAPORE – The TikTok teen who was shamed online for calling Charles & Keith a “luxury” brand will be having the last laugh.

Miss Zoe Gabriel was mocked by some users after uploading a video on the social media platform on Sunday, thanking her father for gifting her her “first luxury bag” from the home-grown fashion brand and excitedly unboxing and modelling her new arm candy.

The black Double Handle Tote Bag is priced at $79.90 on Charles & Keith’s website, and is the most expensive bag she owns.

The 17-year-old, who told The Straits Times over e-mail her family moved to Singapore from the Philippines in 2010, replied to the trolls by posting a follow-up video in which she tearily explains her humble background and talks about privilege.

Both clips have since gone viral, attracting 5.6 million views.

“My family didn’t have a lot. We couldn’t buy things as simple as bread from BreadTalk… when we first moved to Singapore… Your comment spoke volumes on how ignorant you seem because of your wealth,” said the eldest of four siblings who is currently homeschooled but will be graduating in a few months.

Miss Gabriel’s mature response did not just impress many viewers, but also the team from Charles & Keith.

The company’s spokesman told ST in an e-mail: “Our heart really went out to Zoe, but we were so impressed with (how gracefully) she handled the situation, displaying wisdom far beyond her years and values that resonated with us greatly.

“Our founders believe that our products should spark joy, empower fashion lovers and give them confidence, something we believe she presented so eloquently in her video and for which we are so grateful.”

Charles & Keith remained mum on whether it would sponsor any bags for her or collaborate with her, as urged by her online supporters.

However, it has invited Miss Gabriel and her father to have lunch with its founders who, “coming from humble beginnings, were so inspired by her humility”. A tour of the Charles & Keith headquarters is also on the cards.

Miss Gabriel said she will be taking up the offer, and is “very excited and grateful for the opportunity”.

Charles & Keith was founded by brothers Charles and Keith Wong in 1996, who learned all about the business by working at their mother’s shoe store at Ang Mo Kio.

Starting out as a humble outlet at the former Amara Shopping Centre, the brand morphed into a household name not long after, growing to more than 600 stores and employing about 4,000 people worldwide.

In 2011, French luxury giant LVMH) acquired 20 per cent of the company, but the Wong brothers have since bought it back.

They were recently named in Forbes’ 2022 list of Singapore’s 50 Richest, with a net worth of about $1.04 billion.

Many netizens say this viral incident highlights the ignorance of the privileged in Singapore.

Fundraiser Ivy Wong, 31, who heard about the news on the radio, said it reminded her of a similar experience from her past.

She told ST: “When I was young, one thing on my wish list on my blog was ‘Branded clothes like Topshop’. One netizen commented that it is not branded, and ‘high street at most’. But Topshop was already beyond what I could afford.”

Ms Wong added: “This incident highlights the blind spot of people who grew up with privilege and take it for granted. They can’t imagine what it is like for peers to grow up in a low-to-middle income background, much less poor.

"However, it is also heartening to witness those who have called out the ignorance of those who shamed this teenager. They show awareness of inequalities that exist and do their part to level the playing field.”

Actually she brought it upon herself. Why couldn’t she say she’s happy to get herself a bag, instead of labeling it a ‘luxury bag’. Furthermore, u post stuff online of cos u should expect shit right ?
