Serie A wrap: Matri at the double for Juve, Udinese sink Sampdoria

6 February 2011

12427213710.jpg

Juventus and Udinese returned to winning ways in Saturday's Serie A action with both side's posting comfortable victories.

Juventus snapped a three-game losing streak with their 3-1 win over Cagliari at the Stadio San Elia, thanks to a brace from former Cagliari striker Alessandro Matri.

Matri gave Juve the lead after 20 minutes when he latched onto a through-ball from Milos Krasic and blasted a low shot past Michael Agazzi in the Cagliari goal.

The hosts equalised six minutes after half-time through a Robert Acquafresca strike but Matri was on hand again to restore Juve's advantage on 75 minutes before Luca Toni scored a third for the visitors six minutes from full-time to seal the win.

Elsewhere, Udinese bounced back well from their midweek draw against Bologna when they cruised to a 2-0 home win over Sampdoria to climb to fifth place.

Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring for the hosts in the 18th minute before Antonio Di Natale wrapped up the match five minutes before half-time with his 100th Serie A goal for Udinese, giving his side their fifth win from their past seven league games.

Serie A wrap: Milan lead cut to three points

7 February 2011

12427213900.jpg

League leaders AC Milan dropped more points on Sunday when they were held 1-1 by Genoa in Serie A action.

Massimiliano Allegri's side opened the scoring in the 29th minute, when Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic assisted Alexandre Pato to put the visitors ahead at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris. The hosts hit back before the break when Antonio Floro Flores equalised to help cut Milan's lead at the top to three points.

Second-placed Napoli made the most of the leaders' slip-up, beating lowly Cesena 2-0 at Stadio San Paolo. Edison Cavani provided the winning goal in the 13th minute for the hosts, before Jose Sosa made sure of the result in second-half injury-time.

Lazio were held 1-1 by Chievo, with the point taking them above Inter Milan into third place, with Leonardo's side still to play later on Sunday.

Palermo came from behind twice to beat Lecce 4-2 away at the Stadio Comunale Via del Mare. Fabrizio Miccoli, Javier Pastore, Abel Hernandez and Josip Ilicic all netted for the victors.

Brescia beat Bari 2-0 in a battle of the bottom teams, condemning the losers to last place by a seven-point margin.

Parma and Fiorentina played out a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

Serie A preview: Milan look to halt slump

11 February 2011

12427214890.jpg

Serie A leaders AC Milan welcome relegation strugglers Parma to the San Siro on Saturday, while the chasing pack faces tougher examinations.

Milan, whose advantage over Napoli at the top of the league has dropped to three points, have struggled in recent weeks, recording four draws from their past six matches, including last week's 1-1 deadlock against struggling Genoa.

Despite the minor slump, manager Massimiliano Allegri is unperturbed by the dwindling gap between his side and Napoli. "I knew we had to fight until the end for the Scudetto," Allegri said. "Inter have lots of quality, like Napoli and Roma, but I worry about Milan - and about getting back the many injured players."

"At the moment we are still leading. It is normal that I feel we are the favourites for the Scudetto." Milan will be boosted by the return of midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who has overcome a hamstring strain, while defender Alessandro Nesta is close to returning after a shoulder injury.

Napoli meanwhile face a trip to the Olympic Stadium to take on seventh-placed Roma, with Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, who scored his 18th league goal for the season in Sunday's 2-0 win over Cesena, the key for Walter Mazzarri's side.

Inter Milan will look to continue their revival under new coach Leonardo when they travel to Turin to take on Juventus on Sunday. Leonardo will be missing injured striker Diego Milito and suspended defender Cristian Chivu, who was banned for four games for punching Bari defender Marco Rossi during Inter's 3-0 win on Thursday.

Also on Sunday, fourth-placed Lazio visit the Stadio Mario Rigamonti to take on Brescia, who will be fighting to get out of the relegation zone, while Udinese travel to Cesena.

Surprise packet Palermo, who are fifth, welcome Fiorentina to the Stadio Renzo Barbera, while bottom club Bari, who on Thursday sacked manager Giampiero Ventura and replaced him with Bortolo Mutti, host Genoa.

Cagliari will welcome Chievo Verona in a mid-table clash and Catania play host to Lecce, with the sides just one and two points clear of the relegation zone respectively.

Serie A wrap: Wins for top two

13 February 2011
12427215410.jpg

There was no change at the top of Serie A on Saturday, with AC Milan and Napoli both recording comfortable wins.

League leaders Milan were far too good for relegation-troubled Parma, triumphing 4-0 at the San Siro in an ideal tune up for Tuesday's Champions league meeting with English Premier League club Tottenham.

Clarence Seedorf put the hosts ahead after eight minutes, and Antonio Cassano doubled his side's advantage 10 minutes later before a second-half brace from Brazilian Robinho completed the rout.

But Napoli made sure Milan's lead at the top of Serie A stayed at three points when they claimed a 2-0 win at the Olympic Stadium over Claudio Ranieri's Roma.

Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani moved to 20 goals for the season with a brace for the visitors in a spiteful affair that saw nine players booked by referee Mauro Bergonzi.

Caludio Ranieri is ready to head back to the Premier League.

The former Chelsea boss, nicknamed “Tinkerman” for his team selection tactics at Stamford Bridge, accepts his days at Roma are numbered.

In fact, there is a growing belief in Italy that Ranieri will be replaced at Roma by current Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti.

An American media group have taken over Roma and see Ancelotti as their ideal managerial candidate.

Ranieri said: “Coaching Roma is very exciting but after my adventure here closes I see myself working abroad, in England.”

Turning to Ancelotti’s potential arrival, he added: “Ancelotti my heir? We’re friends but everyone looks after themselves.”

Ranieri spent almost four years with Chelsea after arriving in 2000.

He guided Chelsea to second in the Premier league but was ditched by owner Roman Abramovich who appointed Jose Mourinho.

Serie A wrap: Sampdoria end barren run, Palermo stunned

14 February 2011

12427215530.jpg

Sampdoria broke a five-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over Bologna in the Serie A on Sunday.

Sampdoria had slipped to 14th on the table heading into their clash at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, but put the result beyond doubt inside 15 minutes with goals to Angelo Palombo, Daniele Gastaldello and Massimo Maccarone stunning the visitors.

Daniele Paponi pulled a goal back for Bologna in the second half, but it was mere consolation as Sampdoria moved to 12th in the league standings following the victory.

Fiorentina shocked Palermo 4-2 away from home to deny Delio Rossi's side a spot in the league's top four. The hosts at Stadio Renzo Barbera went ahead in the seventh minute via Javier Pastore, before Fiorentina's Alberto Gilardino made it 1-1 prior to half-time.

Antonio Nocerino restored Palermo's lead three minutes after the break, but a late onslaught saw Fiorentina overrun the home side with Michele Camporese and Riccardo Montolivo strikes coming either side of a Cesare Bovo own-goal.

Elsewhere, Lazio recorded a 2-0 away win over relegation-threatened Brescia, while Cagliari's Nene scored a brace in his side's 4-1 triumph at home over Chievo.

Bottom side Bari stopped a run of six straight league losses when they held Genoa to a 0-0 draw, and Catania's Francesco Lodi scored a late double to help his side overcome Lecce 3-2.

Udinese moved into fifth with a 3-0 thrashing of Cesena that came courtesy of two goals and an assist to Antonio Di Natale.

Leonardo still confident on title chances

14 February 2011

12427215660.jpg

Inter Milan boss Leonardo insists his side's hopes of retaining their Serie A title remain intact despite their 1-0 defeat to Juventus on Sunday. New Juve striker Alessandro Matri scored the only goal of the game in Turin, when he powered home a header from just seven yards out on the half-hour mark.

The loss saw Inter slip behind Lazio to fourth, eight points behind league leaders AC Milan, although they have a game in hand over their fierce rivals. With nine wins from his 11 games in charge since taking over from the sacked Rafael Benitez in December, Leonardo is adamant his side can still challenge for the Scudetto.

"Looking at the results of the last few weeks the table changes a lot, we've had a good run to get into the fight," Leonardo said. "On Wednesday we have another good opportunity (against Fiorentina). Everything is like it was before - there are still many games to go, 14 for us and 13 for the others."

Despite the loss, the Brazilian insisted he was not completely dissatisfied with his team's performance. "There are positives, I'm satisfied with the second half," he said. "We lacked general brilliance in the first half but in the second we had the chance to come back."

"We started slowly in the first but in the second we fought to the end, we tried every way to score." Juve boss Luigi Delneri was delighted with his side's second win in succession, a result which sees them climb into sixth in Serie A and breathes life into their title challenge which had looked to be faltering after back-to-back defeats to Palermo and Udinese.

Delneri said the team had worked hard to push through a difficult period of results and hailed the influence of his January signings, strikers Matri and Luca Toni and defender Andrea Barzagli.

"It was an important game against an Inter team who were in good form and have great quality but we had good chances to finish the game," he said.

"Barzagli, Toni and Matri are important acquisitions for the balance of the team." "We've come through a difficult period psychologically and this win gives us security in what we're doing."

Serie A: Cesena 2 Juventus 2

12 March 2011

12427221990.jpg

Lowly Cesena came back from two goals down to stun 10-man Juventus 2-2 and steal a point at the Stadio Dino Manuzzi in Serie A on Saturday.

Juventus travelled to Cesena on the back of a three-match losing run, and they looked to have put that behind them as Alessandro Matri scored a first-half brace.

But a penalty to Luis Antonio Jimenez in the shadows of half-time gave their relegation-threatened opponents reason to believe, and Juve's worst fears were realised in the 80th minute as Marco Parolo nabbed a deserved equaliser.

The result is a further blow for Juve boss Luigi Delneri, who is under increasing pressure to keep his job following a poor run of results for the proud Italian club.

Matri, on loan from Cagliari until the end of the season, was in threatening form early and had already seen a goal ruled out for offside before his 19th-minute opener.

The Italian striker applied to the finishing touch to a magnificent link-up move with Alessandro Del Piero, threading his shot from a tight angle to put Juve up 1-0.

Cesena should have equalised near the half hour through Emanuele Giaccherini, who missed an easy follow-up to his original shot with Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon beaten and the goal his mercy.

The seesawing momentum swung back the way of Juventus as Matri picked up his second in the 35th minute, finishing where Giaccherini could not after Del Piero's shot struck the crossbar.

But Cesena had pulled one back six minutes later through Jimenez, who converted from the spot after Buffon was punished for tripping up Parolo, and two minutes later Juve defender Marco Motta received his marching order after picking up a second caution.

Cesena came out after the break looking lively and dominated the second half, though Buffon repelled their initial attacks with a number of fine saves.

But Parolo would not be denied, smashing in a half-volley after Jimenez's free kick fell invitingly at his feet 20 minutes from time to heap further pain on Juventus.

Juve remain seventh on the table for the time being, though they could fall as far as ninth once the weekend's round is completed.

Cesena move a point clear of the relegation zone in 17th place, though they will fall into the drop zone if Lecce can pull out something special at home to Bologna on Sunday.

Serie A wrap: Milan held by lowly Bari, Udinese rise

13 March 2011

12427222130.jpg

AC Milan missed the chance to go seven points clear of Inter Milan in the Serie A after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by bottom side Bari.

Milan had Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic sent off in a nightmare day for boss Massimiliano Allegri, who must have feared the worst when his side went a goal down against the run of play six minutes before half-time courtesy of a Gergely Rudolf goal.

Milan struggled to break down a resolute Bari defence, and Ibrahimovic's frustration got the better of him on 73 minutes when he was dismissed for a swat to the mid-section of Marco Rossi.

The league leaders managed to salvage a point eight minutes from full-time, however, when substitute Antonio Cassano was picked out by a Luca Antonini cross and the striker slotted home from close range.

The point means Milan have a five-point buffer over second-placed Inter Milan - who themselves were held to a 1-1 draw at lowly Brescia on Friday - with both teams still to play nine games.

Napoli made the most of Milan's slip-up, moving to within six points of the leaders after their come-from-behind 3-1 win over Parma.

Walter Mazzarri's side went behind to a Raffaele Palladin strike in the 29th minute, but a goal from Marek Hamsik seven minutes after halftime had them back level.

Ezequiel Lavezzi put Napoli ahead on 58 minutes before Parma's Daniele Galloppa was sent off, leaving Christian Maggio to seal the result with a third for the visitors three minutes from time.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Udinese continued their march up the table with another heavy win - this one a 4-0 drubbing of Cagliari.

First-half goals to Medhi Benatia and Alexis Sanchez got the ball rolling for Udinese, before Antonio Di Natale again got his name on the scoresheet with a second-half brace to take his tally for the season to 24.

The win lifted Udinese over Lazio and Napoli into third place, although Napoli can regain third spot should they defeat, or draw against, Parma in Sunday's late game.

Lazio, however, dropped to fifth regardless of other results after they suffered a 2-0 defeat to fierce rivals Roma at the Olympic Stadium.

Veteran striker Francesco Totti scored a brace to bring up his 199th Serie A goal as Roma kept up their push for Champions League football next season by moving to within four points of fourth place.

Fiorentina enjoyed a 1-0 win over Chievo Verona, thanks to a Juan Vargas goal three minutes after half-time, and Antonio Floro Flores scored to hand Genoa a 1-0 home win over Palermo.

A Cristian Llama strike with 15 minutes to go was enough to give Catania a 1-0 win over Sampdoria, and Bologna scored a 1-0 away win over struggling Lecce.

Ibrahimovic banned for three matches

14 March 2011

12427222380.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss AC Milan's crucial derby with Inter Milan after receiving a three-game suspension for punching Bari's Marco Rossi.

Ibrahimovic was shown a straight red for the incident during Milan's shock 1-1 draw with Bari on Sunday, which occurred after Rossi marked the star striker off a cross in the second half.

A frustrated Ibrahimovic, who has not scored a goal from free play in seven league games, punched Rossi after the ball had been cleared and was duly sent on his way by referee Christian Brighi.

A statement from Serie A's disciplinary committee read: "Three-match ban for Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Milan for irregular behaviour after having hit an opposition player in the abdomen, making him fall to the ground without injury consequences."

The club are expected to appeal the suspension, which would see the Sweden international miss games against Palermo, Fiorentina and, on April 3, Inter.

Milan lead the Serie A table but are facing a strong challenge from Inter, who have closed to within five points under new boss Leonardo with nine games remaining in the campaign.

Ibrahimovic leads Milan's scoring with 14 goals this season but has been out of form since February.

Serie A wrap: Palermo stun Milan, Lazio grab points

20 March 2011

12427223860.jpg

Palermo's shock 1-0 home win over league leaders AC Milan on Saturday has thrown the Serie A title race wide open.

Inter and Napoli, who sit second and third respectively, would have been delighted with the result, with the two clubs five and six points respectively behind Milan but with a game to play on Sunday that could reduce the margin even further.

Palermo started well and Dorin Goian gave Serse Cosmi's side an early lead after just 10 minutes. From a corner, Giulio Migliaccio's knockdown found the Romanian who tucked away a volley to score his first goal for the club and heap the pressure on Massimiliano Allegri's side early in the piece.

Milan should have equalised through Antonio Cassano later in the first half, but he could not make the most of Clarence Seedorf's sublime pass, with the striker, signed from Sampdoria in January, hitting his shot wide.

As they did in the first half, Palermo again started well in the second when Mauricio Pinilla and Josip Illcic had shots on goal before they missed a golden chance to extend their lead when Matteo Darmian, who had made a clever run towards the far post, could not direct his effort on target.

After losing Marek Jankulovski in the first half to injury, Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato was removed just after the hour mark, as he hobbled off to be replaced by Robinho.

In the absence of the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Pato was left on the bench but other options were needed to stand up as Milan desperately searched for a second-half equaliser for the second match in succession.

Robinho and Mathieu Flamini both had attempts on goals as Allegri's side turned up the heat, while Gennaro Gattuso had a header well saved by Salvatore Sirigu. Palermo again had a late chance to kill the game off, but substitute Fabrizio Miccoli wasted his opportunity, not that it was to matter as Palermo recorded their first win under their new manager and climbed to seventh on the table.

In the day's other fixture, Lazio were 1-0 winners over relegation-threatened Cesena at the Stadio Olimpico.

Mauro Zarate's second-minute goal was all that separated the two sides, with the result snapping Cesena's unbeaten streak of four matches.

Serie A wrap: Inter close on rivals

21 March 2011

12427224040.jpg

Inter Milan moved within two points of city and title rivals AC Milan with a 1-0 victory over Lecce in Serie A on Sunday.

On Saturday, AC Milan suffered their fourth loss of the season, going down 1-0 at Palermo, and Leonardo's men capitalised to move within a victory of the league leaders with the win at the San Siro.

Giampaolo Pazzini was the hero for the reigning European champions, scoring in the 52nd minute.

Napoli also kept the pressure on Milan with a 2-1 home win over Cagliari which sees them just three points behind the league-leaders.

Edinson Cavani needed a 49th minute penalty to break his six-match scoring drought and he successfully converted for the season to net his 28th in all competitions this season.

Robert Acquafresca equalised eight minutes later for the visitors but Cavani benefited from a precise pass from Marek Hamsik to net the winner just after the hour-mark.

Udinese won their fourth match in succession as they coasted to a 2-0 victory over Catania at the Stadio Communale Friuli, courtesy of Gokhan Inler and Antonio Di Natale goals, the latter from the penalty spot.

Juventus moved into seventh when they beat Brescia 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Milos Krasic (Juventus) and Eder (Brescia) traded first-half goals, before Alessandro Del Piero broke the deadlock in the 68th minute.

Parma boosted their survival chances in the Italian top flight with a 1-0 victory over Sampdoria, leapfrogging their opponents on the table with the victory.

Chievo broke a run of six league games without a win when they beat last-placed Bari 2-1 away at the Stadio Comunale San Nicola.

Bologna and Genoa shared the points after their mid-table clash at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara ended 1-1, with Marco Di Vaio's opener for the hosts cancelled out by a Dario Dainelli goal.

In the early kick off, Roma came from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemi Franchi.

Fiorentina's Adrian Mutu opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Francesco Totti restored parity from the penalty spot.

Alessandro Gamberini ensured the home side would lead at the break courtesy of a 35th minute goal, only for Totti to intervene again with a 52nd minute strike.

Crespo wants to stay at Parma

23 March 2011

12427224650.jpg

Veteran Parma striker Hernan Crespo has rejected lucrative offers from several clubs to stay at the club.

Crespo, 35, has scored nine goals, including three penalties, since joining Parma from Genoa in January 2010.

The former Chelsea, Inter and Lazio striker says his priority is to have his current contract extended.

"My contract expires at the end of the season and I want to keep playing where I feel I'm important to the club, Crespo, who turns 36 in July, told SkySport24.

"I have received some interesting offers, but I decided to wait, because my priority is Parma," he said.

"First of all we must achieve safety, then we'll think about the rest.

After that, I'll listen to the club's plans and make my decisions based on those.

Crespo was delighted with Parma's 1-0 victory over Sampdoria at the weekend that saw them go four points clear of the relegation zone.

"We really needed that win, because it allows us to relax over the two weeks before the next game and winning a relegation dogfight away from home is pretty good."

"Having won such an important game helps us to prepare for the tricky encounter with Bari."

US businessman arrives in Italy to conclude £67.7m Roma takeover

• Boston executive Thomas DiBenedetto wants 67% stake
• 'My dream is to make Roma one of the top clubs in the world'

Associated Press

Thomas DiBenedetto has said he wants Roma to be 'capable of winning [Serie A] every year and capable of being competitive in the Champions League'. Photograph: Alessandro Bianchi/Reuters

The head of a group of American investors have arrived in Italy with the aim of concluding a deal to buy Roma. The Boston executive Thomas DiBenedetto is leading a group which is reportedly prepared to pay €77m (£67.72m) for a 67% share of the club.

DiBenedetto was mobbed by reporters and photographers upon arrival at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport, saying "Forza Roma," before being ushered into a waiting car.

"My dream is exactly the same as millions of fans: to make Roma one of the top clubs in the world – a squad capable of winning [Serie A] every year and capable of finally being competitive in the Champions League," DiBenedetto said before leaving Boston.

DiBenedetto will negotiate with the Unicredit bank, which last year became a co-owner of Roma following a debt-for-equity swap with the Sensi family.

The Gazzetta dello Sport estimated Roma's deficit this year was €40m (£35.16m). The three-times Serie A champions could fall further into debt if they do not qualify for next season's Champions League. They currently sit sixth in the table, six points off fourth.

DiBenedetto acknowledged that his first order of business with Roma will be "getting the budget in order and bringing the club under the financial fair play parameters, considering that currently we're not." Still, he said the club will purchase "five or six new players."

DiBenedetto is one of approximately 13 limited partners in the Boston Red Sox ownership group. Other members of the investment group for the Roma deal are also based in Boston. "They're my friends, they're all successful businessmen or managers with the necessary economic resources for this deal," DiBenedetto said.

Roma last won the Serie A title in 2001 and have had a tumultuous season, with Vincenzo Montella replacing Claudio Ranieri as coach last month.

Serie A wrap: AC Milan win city derby

3 April 2011

League leaders AC Milan are now five points clear in Serie A following Saturday's 3-0 derby win over second-placed Inter Milan.

League leaders AC Milan are now five points clear in Serie A following Saturday's 3-0 derby win over second-placed Inter Milan.

Alexandre Pato put Milan ahead less than a minute into the clash between the league's top two at the San Siro.

Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar foiled an attempt by one Brazil colleague Robinho, but he spilled the ball in the process and was unable to prevent international teammate Pato from making it 1-0 after just 45 seconds.

Milan had a strong penalty appeal turned down in the ninth minute, before Giampaolo Pazzini had Inter's first real chance on 19 minutes.

A deflected Mark van Bommel effort struck the crossbar for Milan, while Inter had a close-range Christian Chivu header saved on the line by Christian Abbiati in an entertaining first half.

Samuel Eto'o passed up another chance for Inter to equalise, somehow missing an open goal early in the second half.

And his team were reduced to 10 men when defender Chivu was sent off for bringing down Pato with the forward through on goal.

The resulting free-kick came to nothing, but Milan doubled their lead shortly afterwards, with Pato heading home Ignazio Abate's cross to make it 2-0 on 62 minutes.

Substitute striker Antonio Cassano scored a third from the penalty spot in the 90th minute after being fouled by Javier Zanetti inside the area.

But Cassano's match would end on a sour note.

The striker was booked for removing his shirt in celebration and then earned a second yellow for impeding Ivan Cordoba, with the subsequent red ending his involvement after just 10 minutes on the pitch.

But the dismissal will matter little to Milan, who are now five points ahead of their cross-city rivals with seven matches of the season remaining.

Elsewhere, Brescia climbed out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 win at home to Bologna.

Perparim Hetemaj and Davide Zoboli had Brescia 2-0 ahead within nine minutes of kick-off.

Veteran Marco Di Vaio pulled one back for the visitors, but striker Andrea Caracciolo made sure of all three points with a penalty on 65 minutes.

Parma axe coach Marino

4 April 2011

12427227410.jpg

Struggling Serie A side Parma have sacked boss Pasquale Marino after their 2-1 loss at home to bottom side Bari on Sunday.

After finishing last season in eighth place with Francesco Guidolin at the helm, Marino was brought in when Guidolin was coaxed away from the Stadio Ennio Tardini to take charge of Udinese.

But with just one win from their past 10 league games seeing them sit only two points clear of the relegation zone, the club's chief officer Pietro Leonardi announced on Sunday that Marino would be relieved of his duties.

"This decision has been really, really difficult for us. We ask for calmness," Leonardi said.

A statement from the club thanked Marino for his professionalism and hard work, and said a replacement would be announced 'later'.

There is speculation in Italian media that former Bologna manager Franco Colomba is one of those in the running for the post.
