Seatown - to compete with GIC?

Can Temasek explain why it has to set up Seatown? It seems to have the same corporate mission as GIC. It is also using Singaporean's savings via reserves, government budget surpluses, tax receipts, etc. Is it that we have too many Singaporean fund managers who needs employment, training with OPM ? Maybe a la the SMRT/SBS model it is ensuring that there is competition ( to improve productivity ? ) when none is needed.

Seatown will have the flexibility to be more aggressive in its portfolio distribution. It will also help reduce connotations of companies being bought up by Singapore.

Semantics will not be sufficient in hiding the hand behind the pot and the till....furthermore isn't GIC already aggressive enough by venturing into hedge funds, real estate, private equity and other alternative investments?

Although Seatown will presumably be augmenting its seed money (from Temasek ) with borrowings, the fact remains that it is a Singapore Inc company> Therefore its liabilities are those of Singapore...Not that I believe fully Ministar Khaw's edict about gamblers being doomed to fail but are we confident that we have enough experienced fund managers at Seatown ( not just ex investment bankers, stockbrokers, regulators etc ) who can truly be masters of the universe?

It would not surprise me ONE bit if all our scholars that attend prestigious universities have been taught education that their MASTERs want them to be taught in order for them to be easily controlled and manupilated.

Temasek has outperformed the indices and major fund managers. Not to mention its "AAA" ratings which even sovereign countries do not have.

It is not meaningful to cf against broad stockmarket indices when the Temasek portfolio is concentrated geographically and industry wise...as for fund managers, unless you look at other sovereign funds, the other fund managers performances are not relevant. Do remember that Temasek's historical returns incorporate transfer of state-owned assets at cost ( some because they were unlisted at time of transfer ). Such returns are of course inflated.

Finally as for its credit rating, this is primarily due to its pedigree as a SOE. Not so much to its commercial performance.

It would be more helpful and elucidating if you can move away from the corporate comm spiel in your responses..

Getting this rating is akin to the durin seller who profess that his fruits is from a certain place in Segamat..and guaranteed good!, you have to beleive the seller; got a very sweet mouth.

All are in a cesspool, only thing is, who is less smelly:biggrin:
