Singapore's military has sparked an online storm after punishing a soldier for leaking video footage of a dog allegedly being abused inside an army camp.

The controversy was triggered after a soldier filmed a cowering stray dog in a military camp bathroom with a taut white rope round its neck, preventing it from lying down or moving around.

He released it to an animal rights activist who shared the video on Facebook on January 14.

The 21-second clip displaying the restrained jet-black dog went viral and triggered widespread condemnation from Singapore's animal-lovers. The soldier, whose name was not revealed, also alleged stray dogs venturing into the camp were being beaten.

The military denied any abuse of stray dogs by commanders and said the soldier had been punished for violating rules against unauthorised photography inside the camp and disclosure of information to people outside the armed forces.

It did not specify the punishment for the soldier, but The Straits Times newspaper said he was ordered to be confined in camp for 21 days.

The army also said stray dogs entering the camp "were a persistent danger to personnel", with six attacks in December.

these strays are helpful during night prowling for those on guard duties, especially in old camp one.
those idiotic officers are the ones posing a persistent danger to the recruits!

Wah this news is now going around the world. Good job to those who informed on SAF's abusive practices. Put some pressure on them.

WHY NOT? People must be held accountable, officer or not.

What these stuck up officers need is a dose of Konfrontasi.

A few Indon commandos creeping into their aircon command post and then slitting their throats from ear to ear would do the trick.

Actually dogs are very smart. They can sniff out a real soldier from a fake one miles away.

A real soldier is a dog's best friend. They will sacrifice their life for you. Fake SAF one? Bite loh.

Taking about security..... Dogs also can go in and out at their own free will.

My thoughts exactly.
How does stray dogs enter camps that are fully fenced up?
What are the MP's, Security Troopers, Company/Battalion Orderly Sgts, RSM and DO doing.?

Was thinking about this earlier too. Either some people allowed the dog(s) in, and fed them, or the bloody guards must be asleep.

Whatever it is, the officer who beat the dog has too much time on his hands and has set a terrible example. Now that his character is exposed, I wonder how MINDEF is going to deal with this kind of crappy officer? The whole world knows about it.

Cheers!

I think this guy is more worthy to be an LTC in the SAF. But wait, he is a real combat soldier. I don't think we have any of that, do we?
