SAF corporal jailed for false info
By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent
A SINGAPORE Armed Forces corporal was sentenced to six weeks' jail on Monday for giving false information to the police that a cop had stolen money from a foreigner. Mohd Alfia Misnan, 29, had admitted lying that he saw a policeman arrest a Bangladeshi, and that his wife saw the cop take money from a wallet and put into his pocket.
He made the 999 call from a pay phone at Pasir Ris Food Court at 12.48am on Dec 26 last year (09), using a fictitious name to avoid identification. His friend, then staff sergeant Shah Rizal Samsir, 30, had instigated him on Dec 25 to lie to the police as the former wanted to get even with Staff Sergeant Ng Keng Lin, 28, for allegedly being rude to him on several occasions.
As a result of the false report, Staff Sergeant Ng was investigated for theft. It happened that he and his colleagues arrested three Bangladeshi illegal immigrants in Little India on Christmas Day. One of them later reported at the Central police division lock-up that money had been stolen from his wallet.
When Rizal heard about this, he called Alfia and asked him to give false information to the police. He also told him what to say by texting him. Rizal was given three months' jail last Friday for abetting Alfia in the offence. Alfia was given until Wednesday to start his jail term as he wanted to settle some work-related matters. He could have been jailed for up to one year and/or fined up to $5,000.
