The Wagner guys were used as cheap replacements because Putin faced political risk if he involved citizens. The Russian military brass did not give them support due to jealousy and also the fact they held valuable assets (gold mines) from their previous outings in Africa.

wagner has been fighting russia’s proxy wars in the middle east, georgia, kazakhstan, ukraine, armenia and africa for decades and has garnered mercs from all these war torn cuntries. if the regular russian military betrays them, it’ll be civil war and a tough one as they can behave like terrorists and guerillas, fighting unconventional asymmetric battles.
looks like prigozhin is using the ukrainian counter offensive as an opportunity to rebel against russian military. he wasn’t anti-putin and was hoping putin will dismiss shoigu. but since putin tripled down and sided with shoigu he (prigo) has little choice but go all the way to moscow. there are other wagner elements in kazakhstan as wagner helped kazakh regime quell a rebellion. and in ossetia (georgia front) and armenia and azerbaijan. plus remnants in syria, yemen, and africa. if it’s full scale civil war, all will gravitate towards moscow from several fronts. plus all the prison soldiers are more sympathetic towards wagner than russian military. they have no loyalty to putin nor russia under the current regime.
