Refund cheat also jailed for molest and obscene calls
By Khushwant Singh
MERVYN Koo Yong Wei, 33, would take items from the shelves of a supermarket and then lie to the cashier that he had bought these earlier but needed to return them. Even without a receipt, he would sometimes be able to obtain refunds.
In-between cheating supermarkets, the unemployed man molested a 13-year-old girl and made three obscene phone calls to the police hotline. A district court jailed him on Tuesday for eight months. He had pleaded guilty on May 16.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Paul Wong Chun Yi said that on May 19 last year, Koo had dishonestly induced Cold Storage Parkway Parade to refund $113 for six boxes of hair dye that he claimed he had bought earlier.
On Nov 24, Koo cheated the Cold Storage store at PoMo shopping centre along Selegie Road of $84 with the same trick. Immediately after, he headed to the Cold Storage store at the Funan DigitaLife Mall. Even though the duty manager insisted he leave the items behind and return the next day with the receipt, he walked off with the cosmetics worth a total of $64. At hour later at 4.40pm, he stole $132 worth of cosmetics from Cold Storage Centrepoint.
His luck ran out the next day. He tried to cheat the manager of Cold Storage UE Square of a refund of $121, who then called the police.
Investigations then linked Koo with the molestation of an underaged victim in the car park in Jurong West on Nov 16 last year. It was also found that in the evening of Nov 21, he drank three bottles of beer and called 999 thrice to ask the policewomen who answered his calls for sex in an abusive manner.
