In his Parliamentary response to queries about helping Singaporeans who could not afford to pay mortgage payment, first-time Minister of State for National Development Koh Poh Koon advised that Singaporeans who are poor should sell their HDB flat and rent, and that the HDB is not a bank that offers financial assistance.

PAP MP Joan Pereira was asking the government what kind of mortgage assistance HDB provides to the retrenched, particularly those in their late 40s and 50s. Minister Koh Poh Koon responded:

“For those who face longer-term hardship… Right-sizing to a flat within their means is also an option. For low income households who are unable to afford another flat, have no family support and no other housing options, HDB may offer them a public rental flat.

The Housing Board is not a bank and is unable to offer personal loans.”

Minister Koh said those who need help can get financial counselling and referrals to social support agencies for job placements and financial aid.

I would have thought the same as he would have witnessed a lot of misery in his prior work and would have a modicum of empathy. Seriously I have no idea why they picked and he obviously has not learnt his lesson.

Nobody even came close to mention that about HDB since its inception. Its role was to provide public housing and why are we having poor people despite all the claims made by the PAP. When people are retrenched where they are going to find the money. We are talking about people who were working, prepared to work and not some porlumpar in People Association.

Widow forced to sell HDB flat to finance medical expenses of late husband and ill mother-in-law

Chris Chua posted in his Facebook that the widow of his friend who passed away from cancer recently is forced to sell her 4-room HDB flat to pay for her late husband’s medical expenses, as well as to finance the hospitalisation bill of her mother-in-law who suffered a stroke.

His friend suffered from cancer and passed away at the age of 47, leaving behind his wife, a 2 year old child and mother.

The man’s mother recently suffered a major stroke and has to be hospitalised permanently.

“The hospital bill for both my friend and his mother run up to $200,000. His mother can’t use her CPF,” Chris said.

“(His wife is being) forced to sell their flat to finance the hospital bill and household bill urgently,” he added.

The HDB flat being sold is in Serangoon North Ave 1. The family is selling the flat with all furnishings and household items in them.

Financial counselling for what? That's not the help you want when you are jobless and trying to keep the roof over your head.
