Doctor Charlie Teo says racism is still very much alive in Australia

By Henry Budd and Gemma Jones

The Daily Telegraph

January 19, 2012 12:00AM

Dr Charlie Teo, a world-renowned neurosurgeon and son of Chinese immigrants, said yesterday that while Australia was "the best nation in the world", even his daughter had been a victim of abuse by drunken Aussies because she looks Chinese, The Daily Telegraph reported.

"I don't quite like it when I hear politicians reassuring the Indians there's no racism in Australia. That's bullshit," Mr Teo said at the NSW Australia Day Council's launch yesterday, ahead of his speech on Monday.

"Racism is still very much alive in Australia."My daughter, for example, was saying to me just the other day, very sadly, she doesn't like Australia Day. She has in the past dressed up, got into the spirit of things, put a sticker on her face, worn the green and gold and been told by drunk Australians to go home because she looks Chinese.

"That's so sad. You can't get more Australian than my daughter."

But immigrants also had a role to play to ensure they were embraced, he said.
"I get upset when I see ethnic minorities behaving in a bad way," Dr Teo said.
"I know it's controversial but you can't expect Australians to embrace immigration unless immigrants who come here are respectful."

The Order of Australia Medal recipient and two-time NSW Australian of the Year finalist said he loved Australia's egalitarian mentality and other attributes, adding: "The bottom line is I believe in (Australia), although there are some faults it is still the best nation in the world in which to live.

But I don't think it's right for a white Australian to say there is no racism. You have to be an Indian to say there is no anti-Indian sentiment and you have to be Middle Eastern to say there is no Middle Eastern racism.

"Unless you're Indian you can't say there is no anti-Indian feeling," he said.
Dr Teo also gave the example of a neurosurgeon who came to Australia to study with him for three months.

"He was Indian and it was so sad. He came in one day and says 'I was just standing on the side of the road waiting at the traffic light' and someone spat at him and told him to go home, back to India.

"Just spat on him. How sad is that? That that still exists.
"When you think about it, we are all immigrants, apart from the Aborigines here today, we are immigrants. "So to think that Australian means white Caucasian is absolutely wrong."
Prime Minister Julia Gillard was instrumental in the Government's response to the mistreatment of Indian students.

"Australians are an open and generous people, and we repudiate racism wherever we see it," her spokesman said.

Anti-Discrimination Board president Stepan Kerkyasharian said there was racism in any society.

I couldn't agree with this man more. Unless you are not white, you DONT have the ability to state that racism doesnt exist in Australia. Those that experience it are told that these are one-off incidents yada yada.....the same worn out excuses. Put a beer in a white Aussie and then listen to the vile that they spit against everyone that doesn't look and sound like them. Australians still have a lot of growing up to do. A LOT. Australia is the world's fort and centre for racism.

No big deal. Just say it out loud like Dr Teo.

Racism is everywhere, just that when people are drunk, they verbalise it.

My exGF is white and she also called the bogans White Trash as well. A lot of her friends just do not know about asians, and ignorance breed racism.
There is this friend who slurred me and got wacked by a 9 iron cobber (pity-hardly hear that term these days)

I am racist to ah tiongs, ah neh, wogs for the same reasons.

So far, the ah nehs in Australia are the most racist of them all and as a result, they are scared or racism and also play the RACISM card everywhere - from Cricket to Jobs in Australia.

If you consult an ahneh doctor, you can guarantee that the specialist he refers you to, will also be an ahneh.

I was so humilated by an ahneh once who gave me the "racist" look that I refuse to buy anything from him. A white aussie customer saw what happened to me and left the place as well.

The Vietnamese copped the worst racism - being the first asians to arrive in Australia while the White Australia policy is still in place.

Once Upon a Time in Cabramatta is the untold story of how the Vietnamese community overcame the odds and found their place in multicultural Australia.

The story begins with the landmark decision of Prime Minister Fraser to open Australia’s doors to thousands of refugees at the end of the Vietnam War. It is a moment in history that finally buries the infamous White Australia Policy and transforms a nation.

The years that follow are as dramatic as they are turbulent - a people struggling to find their place in a foreign land. In this one tiny Sydney suburb, the 80s and 90s see the arrival of street gangs, a heroin epidemic and the first political assassination in Australia’s history.

The Vietnamese people are vilified and demonised. Cabramatta it seems represents all that is wrong with Asian immigration. What’s more the community exist against a political backdrop that is fractured, the universal support for multiculturalism a distant memory.

But as the century draws to a close there is a remarkable turnaround. The Vietnamese people finally find their voice – speaking up to claim their rightful, democratic place in their adopted home. Cabramatta is a community transformed. Australia, a continent changed forever.

Not just in Oz, everywhere.

As long as it is not federally endorsed, that is a step in the right direction.

There will always be that element that exist in every individual, but how it is displayed publicly is where it matters. Education, jobs, public office and places, these should be 100% open to every race. Private Clubs, organizations, they can have it as traditional as they want, that's fine. Don't like it, don't patronise, go to your own club.

Cheers!

White are arrogant? You have not seen the even more arrogant one, the Black (oar puay)
Meanwhile, yellow skin are meek, timid and keep quiet after being abuse??

Dr Teo (borned to Singapore migrants and a Perth wife) loves motorbikes and listen to Abba/John Denver while operating on his patients. The kind of non conformist that will not fit into straight and proper Singapore? Why does he remain in Sydney?

Don't migrate to Australia because it is getting too expensive. Better move to JB. No racism & no crime there.

Yes, JB now offer an alternative solution to Aus. JB have landed property and no diff to Aus.

Next country to watch out for development - Myanma Burma.

Far East Asians people are not migrating to Aus but instead many have returned to their motherland. Many Hongkies have gone back and so are the Chinkies. Too many whites like playing God (human rights) and create many hidden laws that make investments and biz risky.

If more angmoh go work in Singapore hope they will get the same kind of racist treatments to give them the taste of their own medicine. This time they go find work but not invasion (guns and barrels to colonize again) and give them the same racist treatments what they did to brown Asians in Ozland.

Which ore puay are you referring to? Negro, Lebos or the S Americans.

keeping quiet and exercise patient does not mean Asians are meek and timid and also it is not in your motherland to be arrogant with the Whites.

White trash goes everywhere and bring their arrogant with them, anyway.

Saw once upon a time in Cabramatta as well. A lot of Vietnamese have successfully assimilated into the Australian culture. Its a very interesting story as they are the first and there are no real measures, programs to help them assimilate into the country. Nowadays its the habibs you have to watch out for. Couple of shootings every day now in Sydney.

The lebo are different from the vietnamese. The latter try to fit into the mainstream, but the former want the mainstream to fit into their lifestyle. Eg Sharia Laws in some suburbs.

Enough about the lebos. They are a hopeless corrupt mob.

More about Indians ...

My colleague recalled interviewing an Indian IT professional.
When he asked if he knows about Blueberry, the IT professional boosted about 2 years experience maintaining Blueberry software.
Then my colleague took out his Blackberry and looked at the brand "BLACKberry" corrected his own mistake. There is no Blueberry, it is Blackberry.

Later on, HR Dept received a complain from a Gupta guy from an Indian Student Society complaining about my colleague tricking Indian candidate during the interview because of racism.

Racism rife in finance and IT hiring policies in Australia

A survey finds workers believe racism is rife in the IT industry.

ALMOST three-quarters of finance and information technology workers say racism exists in Australian hiring practices, with 30 per cent having first-hand experience of it, a survey has found.

The survey by Balance Recruitment found that workers from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and China were more likely to suffer the prejudice.

"The issue of racism in hiring practices is significant, though the vast majority of clients do not discriminate on racial grounds,” Balance’s joint managing director Paul Foster said.

"I’m aware of many examples, directly and anecdotally, in the IT / finance industry over a lengthy period of time. Some of the stories actually make your skin crawl."

The survey of 895 workers revealed 72 per cent believed racism exists in hiring practices in Australia.

Those who felt racism was a major issue came from backgrounds including Anglo-Saxon, African and Asian.
Eight per cent of respondents said they believed ethnic stereotyping was warranted.

Lol, talk about lebos, saw an incident today at the imaging centre today. Middle eastern lady came in for an ultrasound and was late. She started accusing the recptionist of treating her badly because she has to now wait for her turn. Talk about being unreasonable. Even here they think they own the country.

What to expect from The Land of Kangaroos?!!!!

Yes. What do you expect from 120 nationalities let loose to roam the continent-country.

Life is a lot better than getting caged up in a managed-dictatorship overcrowded island-country.

The difference, according to an ex Indian Singaporean, is that racism is much much more intolerable in Singapore than in Australia. He should know. He was racially bullied from kindergarten to working life.

I do not have problems with racism in Perth. Maybe Perth does not have too many British rejects as QLD. hahaha Anyway, I avoid the bogan suburbs, for good reasons too.

I just pity those people, the ONP people and the those who missed the White Australia Policy. So far, no one has asked me to return to China yet. I am waiting for someone to tell me that since the day I arrived.

The fact is, I hve my shoes on both sides of the coin. As a ex-Singaporean seeing FTs arriving in big numbers. And as a migrant myself in an adopted country.

I experienced worse racism in the UK, esp with those smart people who are with the Brit Nationalist party, who are crafty troublemakers as well as lecturers who will deliberately find trouble with my assignments.

Charlie's interview with Sky News is interesting.
But the part that I disagree with is copying American nationalism here. It is no difference from waving a little red book at Chinaman Mao.

I do not like the idea of American Patriotism. It seems so fake to be seen as a patriotic Aussie. That will be lying to my heritage and culture. No flag waving for me. I am comfortable with my identity as an Aussie citizen (the term does not matter) What matter most is that I am here to stay and I am made to feel welcome.

Julia Gillard 'rescued' amid Australia Day

Australian PM Julia Gillard and leader of the opposition Tony Abbott had to be rescued after becoming trapped by an angry protest, local media reports.

About 50 police escorted the pair from Canberra's Lobby restaurant after it was surrounded by some 200 supporters of the city's Aboriginal Tent Embassy.

Mr Abbott had reportedly angered them by suggesting it was time for the camp - marking its 40th year - to come down.

The pair had been at a ceremony for the inaugural National Emergency Medals.

The honours - presented as the country marked Australia Day - were introduced to recognise those who served their communities during events such as the 2009 bushfires in Victoria and the floods in Queensland in 2010 and 2011.

But Australia's newspapers reported that riot police were called to the restaurant at about 14:30 local time as protesters gathered outside, with people banging on the glass yelling "shame" and "racist".

Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott were reportedly forced to wait 20 minutes before police escorted them through a side door.

According to the BBC's Duncan Kennedy, chaos ensued as a bodyguard grabbed Ms Gillard by the shoulders and shoved her into a waiting car.

The prime minister appeared to have stumbled in the process and was missing a shoe. Protesters continued to bang on the car's roof and the bonnet as it sped off.

Supporters had gathered for a three-day Corroborree for Sovereignty to mark the 40th anniversary of the tent embassy.

Media reports suggested some had been angered by Mr Abbott's suggestion in a TV interview that it was "time to move on" from the camp in light of current plans to recognise indigenous people in the country's constitution.

The tent embassy was established in 1972 by four men as a protest against the prime minister of the time's refusal to acknowledge indigenous land rights.

What a disgrace, australian PM should arrest all the protesters and put them in concentration camps and hard labour. Our PM will never run away from the people, because the people love him.

It is a pity that abor has not learnt to be more civilized. Perhaps it is because too much free welfare money has been thrown at them. An average Abor family receive $3000-5000 a month!!
Ever since Sorry Day, there is no need for Tent Embassy. These are just trouble makers.

450738-julia-gillard.jpg

SYDNEY: Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Thursday had to be bundled out of a Canberra restaurant by security service agents after it was surrounded by furious Aboriginal rights protesters.

Gillard and opposition leader Tony Abbott were stranded in The Lobby restaurant as they were pursued by dozens of demonstrators from a nearby protest of Australia Day, which marks the arrival of British settlers in 1788.

The two leaders were dramatically escorted through the crowd by security agents and riot police brandishing shields, and the visibly rattled Gillard tripped and fell during the rush.

The demonstrators had reportedly pounded the building's glass walls, shouting "shame" and "racist".

They had been attending so-called "Invasion Day" commemorations at the nearby Aboriginal tent embassy, a permanent camp of indigenous activists celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Michael Anderson, founder of the tent embassy, said the group had been angered by remarks made by Abbott earlier in the day about the embassy no longer being relevant.

"He said the Aboriginal embassy had to go, we heard it on a radio broadcast," Anderson told the Australian Associated Press news agency.

"We thought no way, so we circled around the building."

"What (Abbott) said amounts to inciting racial riots," he added.

Aborigines, whose cultures stretch back tens of thousands of years, are believed to have numbered around one million at the time of British settlement, but there are now just 470,000 out of a total population of 22 million.

They are Australia's most disadvantaged minority, with shorter life expectancy and much higher rates of imprisonment and disease than their non-Aboriginal counterparts.

This is what the Australian PM said about the Leader of the Opposition during the incident.

What about Mr Abbott? Where have you got him? We'd better help him through too, hadn't we?

I am surprised that she did not leave him to the abo dogs. Maybe I am still too used to Singapore politics.
