Qualcomm Officially Denies That Snapdragon 820 Has Overheating Issues

by Mihai Matei October 29, 2015

A couple of days ago we came across a rumor originating from South Korea, claiming that not unlike the Snapdragon 810, Qualcomm’s next-gen SoC – the Snapdragon 820 – is affected by overheating issues as well.

The rumor also suggested that Samsung might come to the rescue, either with a patch or, in the worst-case scenario, a “radiating pipe” that would help to dissipate heat.

You can read more about the alleged reasons as to why Samsung would invest time in fixing Qualcomm’s SoC in our initial report, but more importantly and to the matter at hand, earlier today Qualcomm China touched on the issue via Weibo, and denied the rumors that the Snapdragon 820 overheats.

Qualcomm Officially Denies That Snapdragon 820 Has Overheating Issues

Qualcomm Claims the Snapdragon 820 Doesn’t Overheat

Today, Qualcomm China made a new post on its official Weibo account, where it publicly denied the rumors regarding the alleged overheating issues plaguing the Snapdragon 820. The chipmaker added that the Snapdragon 820 will continue to be enhanced and that, as yet, the SoC meets the chipmaker’s design specifications.

The Snapdragon 820 features four 14nm custom Kryo cores clocked at frequencies of up to 2.2 GHz per core, and according to Qualcomm, this particular configuration should deliver up to twice the performance and power efficiency of the Snapdragon 810.

A Chinese analyst with a solid track record has recently claimed that, according to his sources, the Snapdragon 820 is 50% more powerful than Samsung’s Exynos 7420.

The SoC should be manufactured in Samsung’s facilities using 14nm FinFET technology, and if we are to believe most of the leaks and rumors so far, the Snapdragon 820 should also be used by Samsung for the creation of the Galaxy S7, along with a new in-house Exynos SoC known as the “8890”, rumored to enter mass production in December.

For now we can rest easy knowing that Qualcomm is confident in its product. By the sound of it the Snapdragon 820 works well within the standard parameters, but we’ll keep you up to speed in case the story develops further.
