They showed no respect for the leader of their country. For that, they deserve what they've got.

If anyone can simply behave in such a disrespectful and rowdy manner in public whenever they please, civil society and all it stands for would crumble. This has already happened in many parts of the liberal West.

If the leaders of the country are corrupt and trample on human rights, they don't deserve respect. It will become the duty of every patriotic citizen to oppose them and oust them.

Femen topless protester wins French asylum

Inna Shevchenko says her attack on a cross targeted patriarchal religion

A topless activist who used a chainsaw to fell a large cross in the centre of Kiev says she has been granted political asylum in France.

Inna Shevchenko caused outrage among many in Ukraine with her act, which she said was in sympathy with the Russian punk band Pussy Riot.

The member of the activist group Femen said she had made a "strategic choice" to seek asylum in France.

She said she feared persecution for her activities in Ukraine.

She has said she received death threats after cutting down the cross, which was, according to Ukrainian media, a monument to victims of Stalin's repression in the 1920s and 1930s.

Femen said the act was a strike against patriarchal religion, in support of three members of Pussy Riot who were prosecuted in Russia for performing a punk song in a Moscow cathedral.

Ms Shevchenko fled to France, where she has set up a branch of the controversial feminist movement and mounted a series of stunts, in which Femen members bare their breasts in protest.

"To develop the movement, we need a place, we need a country," she told the AFP news agency.

France's refugee agency refused to comment, saying information on asylum requests was confidential.

But AFP said it had seen documents confirming the decision.

Femen activists have made headlines by launching numerous stunts, including stripping in Notre Dame cathedral, and lunging half-naked at the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

While some feminists say they are bringing publicity to the cause, others have accused them of betraying true feminist values.

ou'd be forgiven for assuming there was little more to goggle at in the saga of the feminist punk collective, two members of which were sentenced to two years in penal camps after a 40-second performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in February 2012. Yet this summary is spiked with enough shocks to make even those familiar with the Pussy Riot story gulp.

First is the shambling amateurism of that show – it's so brief! And such a mess! The second is the band's naivety; these women are barely out of college, caught short by the hardline nature of the regime they were protesting against. The third is their increasing poise; they admit their failings, express genuine contrition for offence caused, and, by the end speak with an intellectual rigour far superior to the work that landed them in trouble in the first place. A Punk Prayer is propaganda that leaves you in no doubt which hymn book you're supposed to sing from. But it's also smart and modulated, with attention given to the broader cultural background, and a platform offered to the rioters' detractors.

OMG Marianne is Inna from FEMEN

Femen-inspired postage stamp angers French right
Designers say youthful depiction of Marianne for new stamp was partially inspired by Femen founder Inna Shevchenko

It was supposed to be a straightforward new postage stamp to mark François Hollande's presidency: a more youthful depiction of Marianne, the feminine symbol of the French Republic, reflecting the Socialist president's promise to help the younger generation.

Instead, the portrait has sparked a spat on the political right after one of its designers said it was partially inspired by Inna Shevchenko, a leading member of the feminist activist group Femen.

The designers, David Kawena and Olivier Ciappa, had previously said their inspirations ran from the Renaissance to French comic strips and Japanese manga. But after the stamp's launch on Sunday, Ciappa tweeted: "For all those who are asking who the model was for Marianne, it's a mix of several women, but above all Inna Shevchenko, founder of Femen."

Christine Boutin, a former minister under Nicolas Sarkozy and founder of the Christian Democrat party, tweeted her disgust and her party called for a boycott of "this outrageous stamp", saying it was an attack "on the dignity of women and the sovereignty of France" and should immediately be withdrawn.

Femen, which often stages topless street protests, was started in Ukraine but is now based in Paris after Shevchenko was granted political asylum following outrage at her felling of a giant cross in Ukraine in support of the Russian band Pussy Riot.

Femen's most high-profile protests in France have targeted the street demonstrations against same-sex marriage. It also recently staged an anti-fascist protest in Notre Dame cathedral and attempted to ambush the French president at an airshow.

Ciappa, whose exhibition of photographs of imagined gay couples was vandalised in Paris the anti same-sex marriage protests, wrote on Facebook on Monday that he had received "messages of threats and hatred" against him on Twitter, "some violent and some funny, such as Christine Boutin's call to boycott my stamp".

Shevchenko tweeted: "Femen is on French stamp. Now all homophobes, extremists, fascists will have to lick my ass when they want to send a letter."

Several French artists have designed different Mariannes for French stamps, but this is thought to be the first inspired in part by a woman who isn't French.

Ukrainian Femen Leader Becomes French National Symbol

French President Francois Hollande has chosen a controversial Ukrainian feminist known for her topless protests as the new incarnation of Marianne, one of France's national emblems, in a move that is drawing mixed reactions.

Hollande chose July 14 -- Bastille Day, the country's most popular national holiday -- to unveil a new stamp inspired by Femen movement leader Inna Shevchenko.

It is the first time a foreign woman has been picked to represent Marianne.

One of the stamp's creators, French artist and gay-rights activist Oliver Ciappa, confirmed on Twitter that his Marianne was based chiefly on the 23-year-old Shevchenko.

According to Ciappa and co-author David Kavena, the design is "international and timeless" and blends elements of Renaissance art, French comics, Japanese manga, and U.S. animation from the 1950s.

It was among 15 designs preselected by a jury that included schoolchildren.

Hollande said the new stamp symbolized his presidential commitment to youth. "I decided following my election that the republic's new stamp would have the face of youth, that it would be created by youth, and that it would be chosen by youth," he said.

Belles Letters

Marianne, a young woman wearing a Phrygian hat, became the symbol of the French republic shortly after the 1789 revolution.

Her profile features on France's official logo, euro coins, and stamps, and busts of Marianne adorn town halls and other official buildings across the country.

According to a tradition dating back to 1944, each new French president chooses a fresh illustration of Marianne to decorate stamps.

Previous models for Marianne have included famous French actresses and singers such as Brigitte Bardot, Mireille Mathieu, and Catherine Deneuve.

Shevchenko said she was grateful for the honor, which comes just a week after she was granted political asylum in France.

No Stopping Her Now

The flamboyant activist ran afoul of the Ukrainian authorities after cutting down a cross with a chainsaw in central Kyiv, wearing only skimpy shorts, in support of jailed members of the Russian punk feminist collective Pussy Riot.

"It was a surprise, it was completely unexpected," Shevchenko told RFE/RL. "It's great to enter history in this manner. But the nicest part of it is that now every time a homophobe, a fascist, or an extremist in France wants to send a letter by mail, he will have to lick Femen's backside."

Shevchenko, however, added that France's friendly gestures will not deter her group from staging further unsanctioned protests in that country.

"France welcomed Femen, France took a fancy to Femen," Shevchenko said. "In reality, there are still many enemies of women's rights and of women's freedom, even in contemporary France. These gestures are, of course, very pleasant, they allow us to expand our activities in France, and we are grateful to this country. But it doesn't mean Femen will end its activities here."

Not Everyone's Pleased

But Femen's provocative stunts have drawn criticism in France, too, and many locals strongly disapprove of Hollande's choice.

Artist Ciappa says he has been receiving an avalanche of criticism on Twitter and Facebook.

Religious groups and opponents of gay marriage -- fervently advocated by both Ciappa and Shevchenko and recently legalized in France -- are particularly upset by the new stamp.

"Olivier Ciappa should have found out more about Femen before representing an important French symbol," wrote one critic on Twitter.

"So the stamp's Marianne is a Femen," reads another comment. "A fine illustration of secularism according to Socialists: insulting and intolerant."

The new stamp goes on sale on July 16.
