President Scholar and the Singapore Class

Elitism seems to have become ingrained in our civil service. A President Scholar, David Chan, has coined a new term - "Singapore Class".

Mr Chan is a OMS and President Scholar. He is reading ethics, politics and economics at Yale. Upon graduating, he hopes to serve in MFA as a lawyer-diplomat. You can find out more about him here: http://www.scholarshipguide.com.sg/?pg=read_scholars&id=42.

Mr Chan coined the term "Singapore Class" during an online conversation with a blogger. They were discussing hawker food which Mr Chan felt was "low class". He subsequently coined the term "Singapore Class" to denote things which like hawker food, were low class. You can read about the exchange here: http://www.nichology.net/

Given his high flying status, Mr Chan will undoubtedly come back as an Admin Service Officer and fly through the ranks to make PS at a young tender age. From there who knows how much higher he can rise.

It is because the Civil Service is led by people like him that Singapore has lost its way. As long as we continue to put young people like him in leadership positions, there seems little hope in solving many of Singapore's problems because the heart is simply not in the right place.

What is wrong with a Singapore fake scholar cut from AO? In fact, if the fake scholars think they are great, they can go and work in the real private sector. I noe they cannot survive. That is why they have the million dollar crutch mentality. Honestly, would you employ CCS in the private sector?

By the time he returns to start work, a new government will be in place and that government is not from the PAP. His salary will be slashed by at least 50 percent. He will have to work from the bottom ...no more speed pass for mandarins.

80% of Singaporeans stay in HDB flat, thus my first impression is HDB dwellers are considered Singapore class. So that ugly face scholar stayed in bungalow and ate XO carrot cat in restaurant too?

I agree with you.

Unfortunately, in the past, we have seen one or two similar examples.

I believe that for those who grew up in financially better off families, and do not appreciate the challenges of others who may not have everything they desired, as well as do not put themselves in the shoes of others, but are in positions to draft and recommend policies in Singapore, it will create a "great divide" in the future of Singapore.
