I think you are referring to Newton Circus well-known as a food court mainly for tourist and touts. Adam Road is the road leading to and from MacRitchie Reservoir and I don't think they sell Nasi Lemak at night as they are only frequented by locals.

I am indeed referring to Adam Road Hawker centre.

I think the touts are from the 2 competing drink/fruit juice stalls. The food stalls shouldn't be so pushy.

Come to think of it, you could be right. It indeed was from the drinks stall from my last experience. They had a "if you don't order from me, don't sit near my stalls" attitude that the touts showed me and a friend.

I have never gone back there ever since that bad experience.

As for Ponggol Nasi Lemak, from food quality point of view, I think it has already gone the way of past illuminaries like the once-famous Scissors Cut Curry Rice, Eng Wah Beef Noodle etc. Nothing to shout about compared to common fares from unknown hawkers. But this is Singapore; many Singaporeans have funny sense of taste.

where is this "once-famous Scissors Cut Curry Rice" stall?

I like the one at Beo Crescent stall, its good.

the is another one at Jalan besar. so-so only, tastes just like any other food court PRC prepared econ rice.

The one at Jalan Besar-Kitchener was supposedly the original one, tracing back from founder at Rochor roadside stall in the 70s to Beach Road coffeeshop in the 80s, then to Jalan Besar-Kitchener from 90s onward. After the founder passed away, the standards kept on sliding downward.

Some relatives and ex-employees opened up other stalls too. Today, the best one in my opinion is at Queen Street coffeeshop.

The Jalan Besar stall was there as early as 1983/4... Still remember ppl were talking about a ah long runner sitting in the shop collecting $ everyday from the owner. The ah long sit in the shop for a nearly 2 years to collect all the debt owed.

A lot of people do not understand how tough life is as a hawker.
Sometimes we should be thankful to them.

With due respect, I do agree that life as a hawker can be very tough apart from the long hours, the grease and the grime, sometimes customers can be nasty and unreasonable. But the point is hawkers should not overcharge in the first place. Thankfully,I believe the majorty of hawkers in general and nasi lemak vendors in particular don't overcharge! If not, as one bro has suggested in jest, I may have to buy one loaf of bread and drink water.:biggrin:

Yes, agreed. But taking a look at the picture the stomper has ordered a lot of ingredients.

Beo Crescent chap left many years ago. Moved to the coffee shop opposite CPIB at Bt Merah then to another further down the road. It is opposite an MOE exam board or something like that. Gi Tong is the stall owner's name.

Piang!! Oni 5 mth...price jump frm $6.60 to $8.30...:eek::rolleyes:

Is this nasi lemak worth S$8.30?
nasilemak2.jpg

Is this worth $8.30? (Yahoo! Photo)

This plate of nasi lemak had a drumstick, two kuning fish, an egg, some peanuts and anchovies. Its price: S$8.30.

A photo of the local dish, which is available at a nasi lemak stall along Upper Serangoon Road, sparked a major debate on Yahoo! Singapore Facebook page with many debating over its price.

So just how much is too much?

A plate of nasi lemak at a local hawker centre usually costs between S$3 to S$6, depending on the dishes picked.

Some users blamed the cost on Singapore's rising inflation while others defended the hawker in question because of its taste and flavour.

Teo Buay Hiang said, "Inflation!!! Rental and cost of food and oil are rocket high therefore high price. Hope our new Minister for MND will help to bring rental down and AVA which is under his wing too, to bring the cost of food down."

"Inflation aside, some of these hawkers have been over-hyped and glorified to the extend that they can slap obscene prices on the customers. Blame it on the ever-popular food blogs," commented Holly Zhang.

Felix Yeo likened the nasi lemak stall to a podcast about a bah chor mee stall by popular blogger mrbrown.

"The hawker is trying to set the benchmark. This price increase must be pegged to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)," Yeo said.

Another user Amos Poh put things into perspective and said, "Wah... 30 cents more than a heart bypass.":biggrin::biggrin:

However, some users reasoned that the quality of the nasi lemak justifies its price.

Cindy Peck said "it's this kinda price at Ponggol Nasi Lemak. It's very expensive but it's very yummy!"
