The recent cases of people getting burnt by corrosive chemicals at public areas could be connected.

The police told The Straits Times on Friday night that they are investigating the cases, and are not "ruling out the possibility" of them being linked.

In the past two weeks, there have been two such incidents. On Thursday, a 24-year old nurse, Ms Wan Zahfirah Arshad, had her left buttock burnt by a corrosive substance on a train seat. She has been treated at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and the spokesman said her condition is stable.

SINGAPORE - A 24-year-old nurse suffered three per cent burns on her left buttock after she sat on an unknown substance on an MRT train.

Shin Min Daily News reported that the incident happened at about 11am in the morning of March 2 when Ms Wan Zahfirah Arshad was on a north-bound train heading to Jurong East.

She said that after sitting down, she began experiencing a hot burning sensation on her left buttock which soon turned to pain. As she found the pain difficult to bear, she alighted and discovered a yellow substance on her clothes.

After reaching home, she checked out the area and found a burn-like wound on her buttock. She then quickly made her way to the Singapore General Hospital to get treatment for her wound.

Doctors there diagnosed her to have suffered three per cent burns and she was warded at the hospital. When the Chinese Daily reporter visited her at the hospital, he observed that she appeared to be in stable condition.

The police confirmed that they are investigating a case of "of an unknown substance found on a train and a woman who had sought medical consultation in relation to the case".

The latest incident comes in the footsteps of two previous similar incidences.

On April 17, a teenage boy suffered second-degree burns on his right thigh after sitting on a pool of oily liquid on a bus stop seat in Bukit Batok East Avenue 3. Tests could not identify what he sat on.

On March 24 last year, a 27-year-old Malaysian woman suffered a burn wound on her buttocks in a similar incident involving a wet seat.

In response to media queries, the Police said that they are investigating the spate of cases involving unknown substances on public transport seats. They added that they have not ruled out the possibility that the cases could be linked.

Commander of Jurong Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Wilson Lim, said "Police are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice".
