Police have arrested a man for assisting in managing an illegal gambling den at a private apartment in Geylang yesterday.

In a four-hour operation which started at about 7.30pm on June 19, officers from Bedok Police Division raided a private apartment unit located in Geylang. Preliminary investigations revealed that the male suspect, aged 38, is believed to have assisted in managing the illegal gambling den. Seventeen modified computers and cash amounting to over $700 were seized as case exhibits.

The male suspect will be charged in Court on June 21.

Any person, who being the owner or occupier, keeps or uses a place as a common gaming house, or has the care or management of, or in any manner assists in the management of a place kept or used as a common gaming house, shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years.

Commander of Bedok Police Division Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police How Kwang Hwee said owners have a responsibility to ensure that their premises are not used for illegal activities.

"Those who allow their residential units to be used for unlawful activities can expect to be taken to task," he said.
