SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman for theft.

They were seen rummaging through the belongings of a male victim who was fast asleep at the riverbank opposite Clarke Quay.

The witness, Miss Rahmah Bte Mohamed Ali, 24, spotted the duo on Jan 9 at about 1.30am.

She tried to engage them but they fled hastily. Miss Rahmah then alerted the police and provided descriptions of the pair.

Police officers managed to locate and detain the two suspects along Eu Tong Sen Street and upon checking, the female suspect was found in possession of a mobile phone, while the male suspect had an Ez-link card, both of which belonged to the victim.

Both suspects were arrested and will be charged in court on Jan 10. If found guilty, they face a jail term of up to three years, or a fine, or both.

Commander of Central Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Daniel Tan commended Miss Rahmah for her vigilance and public-spiritedness which led to the arrest of the suspects.

DAC Tan also urged members of the public to stay vigilant at all times and look out for suspicious persons. Should anyone become a victim of crime, notice any suspicious characters loitering around or committing crime, they should remain calm and look out for the culprit's physical description and mode of escape, and to call the Police as soon as it is safe to do so.
