Singapore and Malaysia routinely conduct joint military exercises to enhance security in both countries - especially the Malapura exercies. The most recent one between the Malaysian and Singapore's Navies just ended on 7 March 2012.

Malaysia and Singapore are also partners in the military alliance FPDA which conduct regular exercises with other members as well. Singapore just hosted the Bersama Lima, a major FPDA joint exercise involving sophisticated aircraft, maritime and land forces which ended 4 November 2011.

Singapore is able to afford sophisticated aircraft and submarines because it takes its defence and security very seriously and is willing to spend more to ensure that. Simple as that.

Sorry leh, I have left Singapore for a few years now. That only happened recently for show sake. They still won't share miltary secrets as it is not allowed by the US. When i am in the SAF, i know who my enemy is.

Last i heard, there are exercises involving combine co-operation against piracy.

Singapore and Malaysia have been partners in defence since British colonial era and that never changed even after merger, demerger and indpendence. The other partners are UK, Australia and NZ. Well, you can count Brunei too but its too weak to really contribute anything militarily but its always a good cash banker. The setup is strategically clear. The common potential enemy in mind is the gigantic Indonesia bracketed in between. All those talks about Malaysia turning of the water tap for Singapore and Singapore invading Malaysia for water are crap tales designed to distract domestic political views. Indonesia did invade North Borneo (Sabah) and attempted to invade Singapore under Sukarno (father of Megawati) in an effort to stop the merger. They were stopped because the British forces were still heavily based in this region. Suharto overthrew Sukarno and restored relationship normalcy with Singapore and Malaysia, maybe with just a little inadvertent lingering scepticism and rearguard suspicion. That's why LKY and Suharto were such good friends.

i think China claims to the sea is ambiguous. the islands or reefs/rocks claimed do not support life or economic activities. hence under UNCLOS clause (which China is a signatory), one do not enjoy a 200km special economical zone and hence do not have rights on the sea lane or claim to the natural resource. in fact China use this clause against Japan claims of economical rights around Diaoyutai. so why the double standards in Diaoyutai and South China Sea?

The thing here is UNCLOS was ratified in 1982 and allow a country to extend it EEZ by another 188NM on top of the 12NM. China (ROC) had already formally made the declaration way back in 1930s long before UNCLOS was established. Is the convention binding in this case? If it so, US needs to quit from Guam, UK from Falkland because obviously this territories are more than 200NM from them.

I was on a joint military ex. in Pinoyland way back in 95 and coincidentally there was a similar situation when Pinoyland accused China of building a permanent structure on a reefs in SCS. The soldiers asked if we will help them in a war with China? WTF, how does that concern us? Seems like Pinoy is always eager to drag everyone into their dispute. 2 weeks later, the whole dispute was overshadowed by Flor Contemplacion case and it happened at a time when their election was nearing. What unknown to most sinkies was the whole SAF contingent had to hastily evacuate with with armed escorts as armed rebels threaten to kill us and People were throwing stones at us. Sinkies see for the first hand how the media there unscrupulously distorted facts and how the pinoy was being brainwashed by the politicians and media. I find after all these years their behavior never change.

So what happen if people in Falkland or Guam voted to leave? Things doesn't work this way. Traditionally, territories can be acquired by first discovery (like how Columbus claimed the new world), conquest (How India annexed Goa and Sikkim) or transfer (by Israel return of Sinai through bilateral pact). That happen at a time UNCLOS wasn't even there. UNCLOS is only applicable for new cases.

I think in this instance,the Philippines is raising the tension with china as it believe the US will be her backer in any eventualities with china.
The US on the other hand is using the pinoys to gauge china intention,to deliberately show china as a belligerent power.
The pinoys try to rouse ASEAN to support her but no Asean members supported her except Vietnam which is traditionally anti China and has claims in the region too. Bbesides Cambodia,Laos,Myanmar and Thailand which are pro china,m'sia,indonesia prefer to be neutral even if they too has competing claims in the sc seas.
Spore while pro US militarily is pro china politically,with DPM Teo n SM GOH both in china to reinforce bilateral ties.
So Manila is almost alone in this instance n China knew exactly how it can response to daily tit tats from Manila.
Personally i feel the chinese may use force as a last resort to dislodge the pinoys and to teach them a lesson like it did to Vietnam. However,it will use economic means first n squeeze the pinoys. The chinese do not believe in physical US forces supporting the pinoy in physical combat as the US will not get anything in return with Asean quietly supporting china.
China will also try to reinforce its claims to the island n rebuke any claims of physical geographical closeness as a factot,citing Falklands maybe as eg.
I think the pinoys have not much of a chance in this instance to challenge china head on joint devpm should be the only option for a win win situation.

US won't intervene. The bilateral defence pact is only applicable if other countries invade pinoyland. It not to be used in an armed conflict arising from territorial dispute. Pinoyland claim on Scarborough shoal in 1997 was base on UNCLOS EEZ 200NM zone. US wasn't a signatory of UNCLOS.and hence never recognize the 200NM claim. In helping Pinoy means they accept the validity of UNCLOS and totally contradict their own policy.

There is no need for a military war. An economic war, including banning of tourism is enough to kill the Pinoys. China includes HK too, dun forget. Also Taiwan will be on China's side on this issue.
