ahhh, the signs of trouble from the PAP foreign policy to maintain the sg economy is showing. More troubles to come soon.
If you can't support the locals and be creative to boost the local economy and sg currency by using down to earth local supporting method, this is the outcome.

If you are not capable for the job as a minister, then resign, why still stick to the post stubbornly.

Getting foreigners into sg to make up the population ( plus bringing in their money if they are rich) to support the economy is just a math calculation. Running a country is more than just mere math calculation. This is like copying to pass an exam.

This bunch of PAP clowns are just a waste of taxpayers money.

Because JB and batam administrator and authorities not doing their job. If they knew how, they would have opened up their borders to sinkies already. And give them long term visas if they choose to live there .

1. Every citizen & foreigner living here, rich or poor, must acknowledge WHY the need to control the car population & its growth - simply because Singapore is a small land scarce nation. Each tract of road built will deprive at least 100 families of homes. There is only so much land we have. Thus COE was born, as a means to achieve such - only for those who need the car & are willing to pay a premium for it, for any available qouta when a car is de-registered or new roads opened up.

2. However, with the COE bidding system, it had became a hot social issue instead, of the rich being the only ones driving on the road, & some using it only for groceries or trips a spa or to the hair-dresser, causing despair to many mid level aspiring executives & families unable to own a new car for their needs. They can still buy 2nd hand cars, mostly whom are 3 yrs old, with price in tandem with the COE rise & worse-in need of costly repairs, or be scalped by dealers to buy 'lemons'.

3. The cheaper Weekend red license plate car was a way to address & resolve the issue, to help families, but it is senseless as the costs are still high & worse, unable to use it daily but only for emergencies, & had to use cumbersome stickers & coupons - spending TENS of thousand precious dollars for a 'flower vase'. For sure, there have to be better use of hard earned funds...

4. Perhaps, it is time to reconsider the COE bidding system, & use a COE LOTTERY system instead, to ensure each & everyone is given a CHANCE to own a car in our country & stem the anguish faced by many whom need the car. This is how it works, only 3 conditions:-

A) New cars will be sold at Open Market Value & all citizens & foreigners alike, can participate & register their desire to own a car thru a LOTTERY system, with a $20 non-refundable fee to prevent frivolous registration.

B) Once a name had been picked from the participants, the COE is non-transferable for the car's life span 10yrs ( to prevent 99-1 issues), & will allow only SINGLE PARTY insurance cover ( which means no other person is allowed to drive the vehicle). He/She will have 6 months to register for a car, failing which, the COE is returned back to the authorities to be use for others.

C)After registering the car, should he/she have issues on owning the car such as financial or vehicle problems, he/she can only sell it back to LTA 10% below prevailing rates, whom will form an agency, to auction off the car. The 10% discount/penalty is for LTA to fund the administration of such an agency, & any profits from the auction will be returned to the National Treasury.

5) So as not to distress company CEOs whom are contributing to our country & creating jobs for us, most whom most certainly need cars in the conduct of their business, a different category of COE can be offered to them & only them, & not for their entire family or relatives.

6)For those whom had been unsuccessful in their application for lottery COE registration, they can always participate in the next one, & hopefully, they succeed should they really need the car. In the meantime, there are still low cost & seamless EFFICIENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT in Singapore, often held to demands by our elected govt whom are responsible to the electorate, to be productive & efficient even when worldwide inflation had shot to the moon, to serve the rest of citizens whom can do without a car & whom support our land scarce nation's policies.

7)As for private transportation companies such as taxi, car-hiring, car sharing, etc, they must not be allowed to participate in public CEO lottery system, because based upon their huge needs for cars & huge investments poured in, they will only cloud the demand & overwhelm the lottery system, depriving others of their needs.

Worse, should they win the bids, they have NO moral compulsion towards those whom rent their transport, as they are NOT charitable organizations, but to make profits for their investors. Thus, they will only raise their prices without batting an eyelid & may even progress to a point whereby citizens will wonder - is it not better to own one's personal transport than to support those firms, which are only sinking holes for their hard-earned money.

Singapore welcomes investments & innovations. Such companies do serve a purpose, but for sure, they are not charity organizations. To meet their needs, they will have to turn to the 2nd hand car market, as ultimately, rentals of such vehicle do not care about 'virgin' cars anymore. Furthermore, based upon their huge financial resources, they will have the ability to service the vehicles regularly based upon economies of scale.

These ideas are mere musing & coffee-shop talk from the insignificant nobody simpleton me. I am sure our elected legislatives will have better solutions. All the best to all..

LTA should not allow Agent/Dealer to bid for COE. Each COE must be purchase by Buyer, tagged to their NRIC or FIN number
Successful bidden COE must be paid & utilize within the Month of Purchase.
No stock up of COE, or else 10% of the COE impose as penalty fee on the 2nd Month onwards

COE lottery? Surely that’s a stupid idea. If I am an asshole company like Grab, I can easily get 1000 clowns to try their luck.

Those who want the fancies in life can pay for it. COE is just fine as is; a few fine-tuning is necessary to extract more those who can afford it, like the rich foreigners here. Double the COE for foreigners would channel more funds from them to us.
PAP can start a COE fund - money collected from COE will be placed here to provide subsidies for sinkees who use public transit.

coe is meant for the wealthy in sg and should be set at a minimum of $369k. all bids above the minimum has no upper limit and can go as high as $6.9m for a supercar with 6.9 liter engine. all low ses sinkies kpkbing about high coes and not being able to afford a car can fuck off or jump in marina bay.

COE is rich people's issue, no need to spend so much time talking about it. Rather talk about how to use the COE money to provide more welfare for the people.
wealthy multimillionaires in sg actually has little to no issue with coe. it’s a drop in the bucket if they wish to buy a $1.69m supercar. only the low ses wannabe sinkies wanting to keep appearances and keep up with the li’s, zhang’s, saverins will kpkb about the slightest increase.

The rich should not be envied, but to be emulated, because of their hardwork, sacrifices & discipline among many other worthy traits, for others to learn & rise in life. However, the rich are not gods, but only mere mortals & are NOT perfect, & do have flaws.

With wealth comes the desire for power to protect one's own wealth & family/relatives, which only leads to chaos & a dystopian future. Power corrupts & absolute power corrupts absolutely, proven since Humanity began, best demonstrated by Marie Antoinette, wife of French King Louis XVI in 1789, with the notorious callous words "let them eat cake" spoken in reply to a poverty stricken French society faced with famines. We Humankind, knew how such words inflamed the People, whom rose up & changed the course of not just France's history, but even the World.

Singapore is an unique civilization, paid by the hardwork, sacrifices & much more from our forefathers & founding fathers, to create an egalitarian society painstakingly built up over decades by many more citizens. Mortal leaders are not perfect, but must remain true to our National Pledge & social compact. More can be done in the name of egalitarianism, but in end where all means are mortally exhausted....then let Heaven decide.....

I don't mind if COEs skyrocket to $300,000, as long as they provide free public transport.

Yakuza among first with relief supplies in Japan

By Terril Yue Jones
5 MIN READ

TOKYO (Reuters) - Tons of relief goods have been delivered to victims of Japan’s catastrophic earthquake and tsunami from a dark corner of society: the “yakuza” organized crime networks.
Yakuza groups have been sending trucks from the Tokyo and Kobe regions to deliver food, water, blankets and toiletries to evacuation centers in northeast Japan, the area devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami which have left at least 27,000 dead and missing.

Yakuza are better known for making money from extortion, gambling, pornography and prostitution, as well as for the often-elaborate tattoos covering much of their bodies.
But disasters bring out another side of yakuza, who move swiftly and quietly to provide aid to those most in need.

As with the devastating 1995 Kobe earthquake, government workers were slow in reaching afflicted areas, and the 300,000 or so survivors, so yakuza groups stepped in quickly, and in many cases, were first on the ground.

Such actions stem from yakuza knowing what it’s like to have to fend for yourself, without any government or community support, because they are considered outcasts.
Many gang members faced discrimination and come from minority populations such as ethnic Koreans or “burakumin” - those who work in businesses seen as related to death, such as butchers and leather tanners.

“Yakuza are dropouts from society,” said Manabu Miyazaki, a prolific author who has written more than 100 books about yakuza and minorities.
“They’ve suffered, and they’re just trying to help other people who are in trouble,” said Miyazaki, himself the son of a former Kyoto yakuza boss.

Others see ulterior motives to the groups’ charity.

“If they help citizens, it’s hard for the police to say anything bad,” said Tomohiko Suzuki, a journalist who has written several books on Japan’s underworld.
“The yakuza are trying to position themselves to gain contracts for their construction companies for the massive rebuilding that will come.”

One yakuza boss rejected such criticism.

“It takes too long for the arm of the government to reach out here so it’s important to do it now,” the Weekly Taishuu magazine, which specializes in yakuza affairs, quoted a top yakuza as saying.

“Our honest sentiment right now is to be of some use to people,” said the boss, who declined to be identified.

GANGSTERS’ CODE OF GIVING

Yakuza groups have so far dispatched at least 70 trucks to the quake zone loaded with supplies worth more than $500,000, according to Jake Adelstein, an expert on yakuza who lives in Tokyo and is writing two books on the Japanese syndicates.

The gangs’ charity is rooted in their “ninkyo” code, Adelstein says, which values justice and duty and forbids allowing others to suffer. “In times such as earthquakes, they put their money where their mouths are,” he said.

Atsushi Mizoguchi a freelance writer and yakuza antagonize who has written about organized crime for 40 years, also gives the yakuza the benefit of the doubt.

“Rather than a PR effort, I think it’s actually good intentions,” said Mizoguchi, who has angered the yakuza so much that he has been stabbed twice in attacks by gang members.
But yakuza shun the spotlight regarding their relief work.

Adelstein explains that there is an informal understanding between yakuza and police who tolerate the gangs carrying out such charitable work, but not seeking publicity for it.
“What they seek most is self-satisfaction,” said Miyazaki, the son of the former yakuza boss. “It’s not for pay, but for pride.”

There are an estimated 80,000 yakuza in Japan. The Sumiyoshi-kai and Inakawa-kai, the second and third biggest organized crime syndicates, are believed to be the most active in the earthquake-tsunami disaster relief.

In a phone call to the Inakawai-kai headquarters in Tokyo, a man from the gang’s “general affairs division” brusquely told Reuters: “We don’t talk.” A faxed request to speak with the Inakawa-kai’s No.2 leader went unanswered.

Part of the reason for the yakuzas’ reluctance to receive attention stems from stepped-up enforcement after a 1992 anti-gang law and increased crackdowns by the National Police Agency over the past year, which have heightened anti-yakuza sentiment among the public.
But there have been no reports of donations being refused -- perhaps because there is no indication who supplied them.

And, says author Suzuki, this is not the time to nitpick over the origins of emergency goods.
“When it’s life or death, you don’t care where your food comes from,” he said.

I hope COE will go up to $1 million for 1,600 cc and below, and all the poor fuck sinkies who have been pretending to be rich all this while will start revealing themselves.

Show me you can do it, PAP !
