较早前，米兰国家肿瘤研究所、米兰大学和锡耶纳大学的科研人员共同合作的一项肺癌检测研究项目中，在2019年9月至2020年3月期间，共招募了959名身体健康的志愿者，并采集了血液样本。
新冠疫情暴发后，研究人员对所有保存的959份血液样本，分别进行了新冠病毒检测和病毒株分离研究。研究结果显示，共有111份血液样本对新冠病毒呈阳性反应，其中16份对免疫球蛋白G抗体呈阳性，97份对免疫球蛋白M抗体呈阳性。
在111份阳性血液样本中，有6份对新冠病毒中和抗体呈阳性，其中4份为2019年10月初采集。
研究作者还提到，2019年11月，意大利不少医生已在老年人和身体脆弱人群中发现严重呼吸道疾病，由于当时还没有发现新冠病毒的相关信息，医疗部门则将此类疾病归类于季节性流感。2020年2月20日，意大利发现首例本土新冠病毒感染病例。研究人员认为，从意大利暴发新冠疫情前的无症状人群中寻找病毒抗体，将可以重塑新冠疫情的发展史。
针对意大利国家权威研究机构推定，2019年9月意大利新冠病毒已经开始传播的学术报告，米兰萨科医院传染病科主任、著名传染病学专家加利表示，他很难想象新冠病毒在2019年9月就已经开始传播。如果事实正如研究报告所述，那么为何病毒却没有在更早的时间出现大规模暴发，将再次成为医学界又一全新的研究课题。（ 作者：博源）
