One person was killed and four injured after a raised slip road carrying trucks on a large highway in southern China collapsed.

A 70-metre elevated section of the road in Heyuan in Guangdong province fell at about 3am on Friday morning, China National Radio reported.

Four trucks delivering sand from eastern Jiangxi province were on the raised section of the road when it gave way, the Heyuan Evening News reported.

A 33-year-old driver told the newspaper he suddenly felt the road tilt and jump out of his cab to safety.

A body was recovered two hours after the accident.

The injured were sent to hospital with broken bones. All are said to be in a stable condition.

He Zhongyou, the Communist Party secretary in Heyuan, went to the scene of the accident on Friday morning and has ordered an investigation.

The section of the Guangdong to Jiangxi highway was opened to traffic in December 2005.
