(CNN) — Eight people have been found dead in southern Ohio, authorities said Friday, with seven of them killed in what appear to be “execution-style” shootings.

Five adults and two children were killed in three homes in Pike County, a rural community about 80 miles east of Cincinnati, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader said. All are believed to be members of the same family.

An eighth person was found dead later Friday at a fourth location, but authorities didn’t specify it was an adult or child or say how the person was killed.

The situation is not being treated as an active shooting and no arrests have been made, the attorney general’s statement said.

Pastor Phil Fulton of Union Hill Church told CNN affiliate WLWT the situation was “very out of character” for the community.

“It’s a tragedy,” he said.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation. It sent more than a dozen agents to assist the Pike County Sheriff’s Office after the request for help came in at 8:21 a.m.

Schools in Pike County and surrounding counties were on lockdown earlier Friday as a precautionary measure, WLWT reported. They are “back to normal” but remain vigilant, Adams County Ohio Valley Local School Superintendent Richard Seas told WLWT.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich called the situation “beyond comprehension” and said the state is working with local law enforcement.

PEEBLES, Ohio -- At least eight members of a family, including one juvenile, were found dead in Pike County Friday in what the Ohio attorney general called "execution style" shootings.

The shootings occurred at four separate locations on or near Union Hill Road in Pike County just northeast of Peebles, according to Ohio Attorney Mike DeWine.


At least seven of the victims are believed to be members of the*Rhoden family, DeWine*said.

The shooter or shooters "may still be on the loose," DeWine said in a radio interview Friday afternoon.*

“Any remaining family members (should be) cautious.”*DeWine*said, stopping short of calling it an "active shooter" situation. "We've never had anything like this."

ABC News expert and former FBI agent, Brad Garrett, said law enforcement agents often refer to shooters in cases like this as “annihilators.”*

In his radio interview, DeWine*said some "very young" children were also found alive at one of the crime scenes and quickly removed by investigators.

The scenes include houses and trailer homes separated by about a mile.


Local pastor Phil Fulton said it was “very out of character for our community, but with the ways of the world, the way things are going, I guess maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. But we are. This is so tragic.”

Even though it's about eight miles from the scene,*Peebles*High School was put on "lockout" as a precautionary measure. This status meant that nobody was allowed in or out for about an hour, but school was still in session, officials there said.*

The Pike County Sheriff's Office requested state help at 8:20 a.m. Friday, according to spokesman Dan Tierney of the Ohio Attorney General's Office.

Union Hill Road is just off SR-32 about 75 miles east of Cincinnati. The road parallels much of the border between Adams and Pike counties.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation, crime scene search unit and cyber-crimes unit all have crews on the scenes.
