NSP, SDP and SPP in talks to boost unity

THREE major opposition parties are in talks to strengthen inter-party cooperation and are looking at various options, ranging from having a loose alliance to even possibly a merger.

If the National Solidarity Party (NSP), Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), and Singapore People's Party (SPP) successfully pull it off, they would pose a challenge to the main opposition party, the Workers' Party (WP), and the People's Action Party (PAP).

SDP's Mr Tan Jee Say, who contested in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, confirmed yesterday that he met NSP secretary-general Goh Meng Seng on Monday and they talked 'about all kinds of cooperation, not excluding the idea of a merger'.

He added: 'The parties are looking into sharing resources, personnel, supporters and candidates.' SDP leader Chee Soon Juan told The Straits Times separately: 'We are happy to work with all opposition parties to achieve our objective of strengthening the opposition in Singapore.'

If they do not invite the WP in for talks; even as an observer, then we know why suddenly there are so many able candidates that crossed over from the other side.

ALL OPPOSITION must stay united.

The next ELECTION preparations must start now. Even CITIZENS must play their part and NOT LET YOUR MPs have a easy time.

aiyah. I think the merger is an excuse for some people to consolidate power. with the giant egos, not all can fit into one single party.

It is WP's own limitations that will exclude SPP SDP & NSP, because the personal relation chemistry does not match there. GMS & LTK no good terms, CST & LTK also each one side. WP can try to merge RP. KJ is son of WP original SG JBJ, so that may work out.

Well, the politics of the three parties are rather different - with SDP taking a Socialist Democratic stance vis-a-vis the centrist outlook of the NSP and SPP. How are they going to reconcile these philosophical differences? Furthermore, there are so many political personalities within each party, who is to be boss? Remember that Mr Chiam, who is the eminent figure amongst the three parties will be largely out of the picture. Furthermore, all three parties are entering these discussions from a position of relative strength given that each experienced an increase in their voter tally during the last election, so they will view themselves each to be on the rise, rather than a position of weakness which will force them to negotiate and concede ground in discussions.

As an ideal, the merger of three parties into one sound great, but in reality, it can possibly get quite messy - with possible internal dissensions, disagreements, etc. Even with a chartered process to mitigate such ill effects, the process might go on for too long and too public hurting the credibility of three parties than actually strengthening them as one.
