A POLICE national serviceman (NSman) was charged in a district court on Monday for acting rashly with his Taurus revolver. Special constable Sulaiman Perwira, 21, is said to have pointed the gun at three of his colleagues and letting off a shot. The incident is alleged to have occurred at the Transport Command base at Paya Lebar Road at 3pm on Feb 22 this year.

Sulaiman is accused of committing a rash act that endangered the personal safety of the trio. Looking embarrassed by the proceedings, the 1.7m tall constable was in court with his mother. He is to appear in court again on Sept 14. The maximum punishment he faces is a fine of $2,500 and a six-month jail term.

AN EX-POLICE national serviceman (NSman), who fooled around with his service revolver and nearly shot a colleague, was jailed a month on Tuesday. Declaring that a deterrent sentence for Ahmad Sulaiman Perwira, 21, was justified, District Judge Low Wee Ping said: 'As a national serviceman entrusted with a loaded revolver, you bore a great responsibility but went to commit a rash act.'

The district court heard that at the time of the incident, special constable Ahmad Sulaiman was attached to the Transport Command base at Paya Lebar Road. On Feb 22, he was issued with a Taurus revolver and 10 bullets for his shift from 9 am till 9 pm. At about 3.30pm, he excused himself from his post and went to a locker room to chat with three colleagues. Special constables Lum Zi Hao, 19, Ng Guo Wei, and Teaw Zhi Qiang, both 20, had completed their shift and were resting.

Ahmad Sulaiman, who had been with them in Team Bravo before he was deployed to the security and support group, walked in and pulled out his gun. He pointed it at them and jokingly told Lum to put on a shirt. He then unloaded the bullets from the chamber into his right palm before clutching the .38 calibre gun with both hands and pointing it in several directions. Unknown to him, a bullet remained in the chamber and the gun went off. No one was injured. Ahmad Sulaiman completed his national service on Sept 9. The punishment for the offence is a fine up to $2,500 and/or a jail term up to six months.
