SINGAPORE - A teenager convinced his underage girlfriend to have unprotected sex by telling her that the menthol in the cigarettes he smoked would have killed his sperm, thus causing her to get pregnant.
Peter Mark Ng Jia Jun, now a full-time national serviceman, pleaded guilty to having sex with a girl below the legal age of 16 and was sentenced to a year in probation on Tuesday, The Straits Times reported.
The girl was then 15 and a secondary student when the unprotected sex took place. Ng was then 19 and unemployed.
The court heard that Ng knew the girl was 15 at that time, with the girl having told Ng that she would be turning 16 later that year, but he still chose to have sex with her.
They first had sex in March 2010 and he did not use a condom. When she asked him why, he told her that he smoked cigarettes and the menthol in them would kill off his sperm.
She believed him and two other incidences of unprotected sex followed, which took place in Ng's flat in March and April.
Consequentially, she became pregnant and gave birth to a boy last February. A paternity test confirmed that it was Ng's child.
The child is currently being cared for by the girl's family while she is continuing her studies at a polytechnic.
The court also ordered Ng's family to place a $5,000 bond to ensure his good behaviour during the probation period.
Ng could have been fined up to $10,000 or jailed up to five years for having a sex with a minor.
