SINGAPORE - A metal rail clip fell off from the viaduct near Clementi MRT station yesterday, in a second such incident in four days.

The clip is about 10cm in size and secured the train rail to the horizontal wooden plank under it, The Straits Times reported.

On Monday, a similar incident occurred where a rail clip dropped from the viaduct of the track near the office buildings of TradeHub21 in Boon Lay Way.

Similar to the first clip, the latest clip found will be sent for a laboratory test to examine the reason for failure, SMRT said.

SMRT Train's executive vice-president Khoo Hean Siang expressed concern over the incidents and said that they will be installing safety nets along these areas immediately after passenger service tonight as a safety precaution.

He added that they will also be conducting a thorough check of the entire system, and will be replacing any clips that show signs of wear and tear.

Mr Khoo assured the public that SMRT takes a serious view of these recent incidents, and are deploying all available maintenance resources to look into the matter.

This is to ensure that public safety is not compromised and normal train operations can continue smoothly, he said.

The MRT system was built for 3 million people.

Now it serves 5 million people.

That's a 67% load increase in 20+ years.

Maybe it is time to en bloc the MRT?

They should start using a different brand of plastic ties. Maybe they should ask Mustaffa for a recommendation

Wait till they have exhausted all means and excuses and the problem still persists, the last resort....

Officias : There are hundreds of Clips holding the rails. Without one, two or three clips makes no defference. No safety Issue here.

Buying directly from the vendor is actually more costly. Knew someone who's job in SMRT was to source for cheaper generic alternatives. That's how much of a skinflint SMRT was. They ran SMRT like some sort of a chinese family business.

That's probably what got them into trouble. If you got something as complex as an MRT system I don't think it's smart to try to save nickel & dimes by cutting corners. If you are not going to use the recommended parts, what makes SMRT think they know enough about the system to go it alone:confused: Maybe if they had the experienced staff they could get away with it but seems that the management didn't value the old timers.
