My salesgirl is earning more than me.

Happened to be free, went to find an old friend who is operating a retail shop selling clothings and shoes. Having been in business for the past 5 years, can see he looked rather stressed. I was very surprised when he told me the salesgirl he hired to man the shop for him actually earns more than what he takes home a month.

I asked him how can that be? He cited to me increasing rental, bigger malls, and hinted to me by end of the year he could be giving up the business and maybe go back to civil engineering line which he did before coming into the business. His pay back then was $3.6K, but he wanted to set up retail clothing because its his passion. He said during our father's time, anyone who is an employee would envy their employer for earning much more than them, but now you would be lucky not to lose money in business and there are cases (in this instance) where the employee earns much more than the employer.

Sad but true. Nowadays being employed is indeed luckier than going around employing people :p

If that's the case, he should be manning the shop himself.
Or he should change her remuneration structure such that it is more commission based and less fixed. She will then have the incentive to try and improve sales.

His salesgirl only earn $1300 per mth. That was what I suggested to him, but because he is selling ladies wear, it is not really possible for him to man the shop alone:o

Last time when he started out, salary is not a problem. This salesgirl is working into her 4th year.

$1.3k is already very low

This man should try to improve his profits by other means. Be smarter!

It is tough doing business in sinkieland.

High rentals, staff salaries, cost of living, empty pockets, mounting bills!

the word retail, rental and salesgirl are already mistakes...rental means upfront expenditure when you have not made a profit...getting a sales girl during retail hours is a waste of money if the owner is not doing other parttime or fulltime jobs...retail, well, how many shopfronts close down every month cos earn not enough to pay rental to Capitaland...look at tanglin mall flea market, pinoys more interested in buying used clothes at b/w $1 to $5 rather than spend at retail shops...there are many biz ideas that cost less than $20K to start up and also can make $5K to $10K per month profits (taxi driver also considered a business) full-time, this guy is definitely barking up the worng tree...bor silverfox should bring him to casino to wake up..

some useful biz ideas:

(1.) start a Biz on ebay, minimum costs, nowaday with 3 and 4g and iphones can close transactions anywhere

(2.) Start an ambulance biz ($20K plus for a used ambulance), where to find 20 years COE, can park anywhere with no season parking, and also no road tax, if one knows how to be creative, can convert ambulance into goods van or transport even, worse case use it as personal transport sure chick magnet one...

(3.) Look around for used things to buy and sell...with so many FTs coming into the country and going out, can always find good, nice and used cheap clothes, then sell it on ebay or flea markets or if you have the bulk can sell on alibaba...very time consuming job and low returns, but safe...

(4.) Be a taxi driver, there are certain places to go where you can drive 5 to 6 hours non-stop and make good profits...e.g. hospital routes, lets say start at IMH then go Yishun, then go Khoo Teck Huat and go tampines, then go CGH, repeat this cycle of hospital and old folks home, and within five hours sure can make at least $100 in profits, no need to go city, get stuck in jam, or pay erp...

(5.) Get a second hand van to start transport business...e.g. in the morning can go 2 rounds to maybe NUH, 12 seater van charge each person $200 per month, 6 to 7 for nurses 7 to 8 for hospital admin staff, 2 hours of work can already make $200 times 24=$4800...

(6.) do not ever get into the food biz unless you are talking about food court or coffee shop...a lot of planning, drawing and unnecessary insurances and expenses before you start...i dont think regardless of how good one's food is, there will be demand for 12 hours non stop...esp when its not fast food..

(7.) Start a fitness centre if you have gone through the process of losing weight before...this one can start in HDB, charge $300 to $500 for a 2 week session, get about 6 participants per fortnight, plan full day activity for them from meals to exercises to games..women will definitely fall for this esp those about to get married or looking for new jobs...also i think at the moment now no need cert or license for this...

(8.) anyother contributions?

being a remisier is also a good self employed option...start by being a dealer first, pay sucks, about $3K per month but bonuses are average 4 months thats $48K a year being conservative, I think house broking rate is $10 or $12.50 per trade...used to have to manage contra losses from own pocket, but now with margin accounts risk is minimised...once established can move on to being remisier...so all in all plenty of safe self employed options in SG...

Your friend never join the membership, be a member, the benefits will be poured from the top, like the cascading champaigne glasses in a wedding.

To proper in SINgapore, one must have guanxi , joing the RC's, the CCC's the whatever C's...

Be a member...can even sell condolences banners, set up teaching fascilities, consultant services, etc can even get family members involved...no bribes taking place of course....but the sea of opportunities is limitles...

BE A MEMBER...why work!

The salesgirl earn $1,300 and your friend (the boss) earn less than that? Then he should just work in McDonalds la.

Salesgirl got other sidelines, show more clevages & butt more sales, and other special 'services' also...$1,300 is basic.

Boss, fix income, no butt or clevages to show:biggrin:

Boss can show the butt ma. Whether sales will decline as a result of this remains to be seen.
