ACTRESS, model and emcee Emily Lim believes that every woman can be beautiful regardless of her size.
“It’s a matter of being comfortable with yourself and knowing how best to project your image,” she said.
Lim cites celebrities and supermodels like Scarlett Johansson, Shu Qi, Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen as her style icons.
“Scarlett dresses well to fit her curvy size while Shu Qi is very comfortable with her own look,” she said.
In terms of personal style, the 1.72m lass said she liked creative mix-and-match fashion from Japan, and Europe’s simple and classy designs.
“I incorporate Japanese and European styles into my daily outfits, which also depends on my mood and the functions I’m attending,” she said.
Healthy at home: Lim has learnt to cook and enjoys discovering new recipes.
“The advantage of being in the modelling industry is that it offers a lot of opportunities to experiment with different looks.”
The Business Administration graduate from Universiti Putra Malaysia was working in an engineering water treatment firm when her friends signed her up for the 2005 Initial-D Drifting Queen Contest in Beijing, where she placed third.
Unhappy with the results, her friends entered Lim in the 2005/2006 Miss Astro Chinese International Pageant, where she won first runner-up and two subsidiary titles — Miss Elegant and Miss Body Beautiful.
“I was scouted by my talent agency, model.com, in between the two pageants and sent for grooming lessons.
“In addition to appearances in commercials, on the catwalk and in dramas, I taught grooming classes at model.com while still maintaining my job,” Lim said.
With support from her boss, Lim ventured full-time into the modelling and entertainment industry in 2008.
She has since appeared in drama series like The Beginning, Falling in Love, Injustice, My Kampong Days, Seeds of Life and A La Model, and local movie Lelio Popo.
The multi-lingual talent who can speak Mandarin, English, Malay, Cantonese and Hokkien has also emceed at several events and appeared in numerous Malaysian and international commercials.
“I’m in the midst of exploring products and activities related to natural beauty and organic lifestyles,” said Lim.
“I used to have skin and water retention problems and I was looking for options to address these issues.
“I learnt to cook and discovered new recipes, particularly organic recipes,” she said.
The Malacca native adapted some of her mother’s Nyonya recipes by replacing coconut milk with yoghurt and adding more vegetables into the dishes.
“I try to practise a vegetarian diet whenever possible and I make sure I drink water and exercise regularly,” said Lim.
“I also make it a point to undergo a regular detox scheme as I find that it helps renew my energy and allows me to focus better.”
In the course of her work, she said she had learnt the importance of having a good foundation, starting with proper lingerie.
