He lived with his biological mother and stepfather in their one-room HDB flat.
In the early hours of Oct 4, 2013, when his stepfather was not around, he allegedly raped and molested his mother.
She was in such distress that she fled the apartment at the earliest opportunity but kept her head to phone her son and record their conversation about the alleged incident.
Yesterday, the slim, bespectacled son, 33, pleaded not guilty to one count each of molest, aggravated molest and rape of his own mother, now 56.
We are not naming anyone to protect the mother's identity.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Sellakumaran, in his opening statement, told the court that the accused was the woman's second of three sons from her first marriage.
On Oct 4, 2013, at about 2.30am, the accused returned to his one-bedroom apartment, where his mother was sleeping alone.
He then allegedly sexually assaulted his mother.
He also allegedly raped her.
DPP Sellakumaran said the mother fled the apartment as soon as she could, which was at about 6am, and headed for her daughter-in-law's home.
Along the way, she used her mobile phone to call her son and asked him about what had happened, and used her other mobile phone to record the conversation.
DPP Sellakumaran said the recording, which will be played in court, will show the woman's distress and how she was struggling to understand what her son allegedly did to her.
The son was charged last November.
Criminal lawyers who had spoken to The New Paper previously said this was an extremely rare case.
Yesterday, the prosecution said it will be calling 22 witnesses - through testimony in court or conditional statements - in the course of the trial, which is expected to last till at least the end of this week.
Some of the witnesses include the mother's extended family members, who will testify how visibly distraught and distressed she was when they met her hours after the alleged sexual assault, said DPP Sellakumaran.
ACUTE STRESS DISORDER
Doctors will also be called to testify on the mother's condition and how she suffered from acute stress disorder.
Yesterday, Ms Crystal Lai, a Health Sciences Authority analyst, took the stand and testified there were two spots on the mother's blouse that could have been stained by seminal or vaginal fluid.
A presumptive test had been conducted, but Ms Lai said the samples were too little and she could not do a second, confirmatory test.
The mother later took the stand, but her testimony was heard in a closed courtroom.
The trial continues tomorrow.
If convicted of rape, the son faces up to 20 years' jail with a fine and caning.
If found guilty of molest, he could be jailed up to two years with a fine or caning. For aggravated molest, he could be jailed between two and 10 years with caning, if convicted.
