Morton's original burger debuts in Singapore

Singapore, July 30, 2009 - We all thought that it was a great piece of steak that launched Morton's of Chicago. Wrong, a burger did it - Morton's Million-Dollar Burger.

And now, the burger that started Morton’s more than 30 years ago is finally in Singapore!
And it's bigger than steaks served at many eateries.

Made with 12 oz or 340g of premium beef, it is larger than any quarter-pounder or burger served in your regular fast food outlets. More importantly, it uses USDA Prime beef and the fries served on the side are hand-cut Idaho Potato fries.

Morton’s of Chicago, globally recognised as a fine-dining steakhouse icon owes it all to this burger that Klaus Fritsch made for Arnie Morton when they both worked for the Playboy Clubs in the early 1970s.

The two, who hadn’t yet gotten to know each other well, happened to be at the Montreal Playboy Club and Fritsch was in the process of creating new menu items for the more than 30 Playboy Clubs in major cities throughout the world.

He was particularly enthusiastic about the new burger he had just prepared, so he had it taken out to Arnie Morton to try.

A few minutes later, Arnie burst into the kitchen, loudly demanding: "Who cooked this hamburger?"

Fritsch recalled: “As I stepped forward to accept responsibility, I wasn’t sure if Arnie was pleased or not...until he said that it was simply the very best burger he’d ever tasted. From that day on, we worked together as colleagues and friends. I left Playboy in 1973 to join Arnie in opening his first restaurant, Arnie’s, in Chicago, and in 1978 we opened our first Morton’s steakhouse, on State Street.”

And because of the success of Morton's, Fritsch has always called the burger, "The Million-Dollar Burger".

While the burger part was integral to Morton's history, it was missing in Morton's Singapore history. But no longer.

You get to chomp on the infamous ‘Morton’s USDA Prime Burger’, which has just been added to The Bar Bites.

For $30, you will get to taste a part of Morton’s history, and more importantly, an American gourmet sensation of USDA hand-ground beef set between two crisp hamburger buns with a choice of Swiss, crumbled blue or Cheddar cheese; crisp bacon, sautéed mushrooms or onions and served with a generous portion of hand-cut Idaho Potato French Fries.

While the recipe might seem unremarkable, what makes The Million-Dollar Burger amazingly good is the Prime beef, grain-fed and aged which rewards it with a superior flavour.

According to Morton's, USDA beef is "unmatched for taste and tenderness" and "features superior marbling–the fat speckled throughout the meat that gives the steak its great flavor."

Another great piece of news at Morton's Singapore. It has launched a new Late Night Feature at the bar.

From 8pm to closing time daily, guests can enjoy three great deals. Morton’s USDA Prime Burger, Heineken draft and Santa Helena Siglo d’oro, Cabernet Sauvignon, from Chile’s Colchagua Valley 2008 will be offered at only $25, $11.95 and $15 respectively.

The popular Mortini Hours will run as usual on weekdays from 5pm-7pm.

Mr Zyron Schoniwitz, General Manager of Morton’s in Singapore, said: “We have had such positive response from the Mortini Hours that we are now offering another alternative for our guests who work a little later or just prefer an option apart from Mortinis. Our Late Night Feature will cater to a different appetite and allow every night at the Morton’s Bar to be a burger, beer and wine night!”
