They admitted for the Singaporeans! But did they admit that themselves are the cause of such pathetic situation?

The thing is respect one gets is in proportion to ones pay or position in life.

Hence, the PM paying himself sky-high salary based on GDP growth is deeply flawed..

Salaries of civil servants must be in line with country productivity growth...

He loses lot of respect for his flip-flop policy on salary remuneration, both for top civil servants and the ever obliging former President.

I have a theory why productivity is low.

There are many gutless Sinkie employees (FTs are also guilty of this, though to a lesser degree) who dare not go home before the boss does. Even when the employees' work for the day is done, they do not want to leave the workplace before sunset, lest they are seen as 'lazy'.

This is especially so in SMEs and certain govt institutions and during the employee's performance appraisal period. 'Stay back and look busy' goes the motto.

Same amount of work
(divided by)
Longer hours spent at work
(equals)
Lower productivity

About thirty years ago or so, the PAP started talking about productivity. Thirty years later, still having problems with productivity.

you are right mate!

in the 80s, they raised salaries, cpf and set up skill development fund where are employers contrbuted basing on head counts etc, now into 2013, they are still talking about the same thing. wdf!

I used to work at an american MNC where this fear was common. You would see the angmos leaving on time & the one's who stayed behind were the locals. Believe me there are reasons for locals to fear for their jobs.

Sporeans have to swallow alot at the work place. While they work hard it is their angmo boss who takes all the credit. One of the worst cases I saw was an angmo female system analysst who ended up being promoted to a director. I doubt it was because of her work but because she was having an affair with the boss

What employers here need is brain productivity. Instead, they are a whingeing and whiny lot, always demanding handouts and freebies from govt before doing anything they are asked to. What they should do is if the kitchen is too hot, then exit the business.

S'pore's productivity well below most developed countries: DPM Tharman

SINGAPORE: Singapore's productivity is well below that of the most developed countries, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, he noted that restaurants here are experiencing difficulties finding employees.

Mr Tharman said some restaurants have raised pay to attract part-timers during the peak Lunar New Year season.

But most still have difficulty finding people, because the overall labour market is close to full employment.

DPM Tharman said these are real problems for businesses, but the solution is not to ease up on foreign worker policies.

He said the solution has to be more fundamental.

Using restaurants in the US, Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong as examples, he noted that they have fewer workers, but are still able to do well.

The same employee handles more duties, and serves more tables.

The employees are well-paid, both full-time and part-time.

They know their stuff, including details of the dishes on the menu, and are well trained.

The restaurants also employ older workers, give them good jobs with some adjustments where required, and customers treat them with respect.

Mr Tharman said productivity then becomes key to upgrading incomes and standards of living - and transforming jobs is the only 'fundamental and sustainable' solution.

Higher productivity will also mean price increments can be minimised - even if wages go up.

He said everyone has to play his or her part.

Employers have to transform the way businesses are run and share productivity gains with their employees through higher pay.

Employees need to pick up skills and keep learning on the job.

Mr Tharman said the government has to keep the foreign worker policy tight, but at the same time lend strong support to help this upgrading and upskilling in every sector.

And customers too have to play their part by treating workers in ordinary jobs with respect.

Council chairman, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, said members will focus on improving productivity at all levels, from the individual worker to various enterprises and sectors. -- ST PHOTO: ALPHONSUS CHERN

THE drive to boost productivity ramped up another notch, when private and public sector union members met for the first National Productivity and Continuing Education Council (NPCEC) meeting on Friday.

Council chairman, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, said members will focus on improving productivity at all levels, from the individual worker to various enterprises and sectors.

Besides ensuring workers are properly trained and skilled to keep up with market needs, enterprises and sectors have to innovate to be more competitive.

' This will raise the overall productivity of Singapore's economy to sustain future economic growth,' DPM Teo said.

For a start, the Council will focus on forming work groups to study strategies to raise productivity in 12 sectors, from construction to manufacturing and professional and business services. It will also develop benchmarks for productivity.

President of the Singapore National Employers' Federation (SNEF), Mr Stephen Lee, pledged to support the Council : 'Workers and businesses have to work together so the fruits of business and economic growth can be shared by all.'

NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say said: "The Labour Movement will reach out to companies and workers to identify and break productivity bottlenecks, and upgrade the skills and capabilities of our workforce through continuing education."

SO WHEN CAN WE SEE OUR TAX MONEY PUT TO EFFECTIVE USE?
SO WHEN CAN THE PART-TIME MPs IDENTIFY AND BREAK PRODUCTIVITY BOTTLENECKS???

what happened to our PM talk of increasing productivity by 70%(JUST BEFORE 2010'S CNY)?

when we going to see reduction in number of part-time mps?

one part-time mp can be doing so many other jobs and/or appointment

so who or which organisation is he/she paying more attention(or any if there is) to?

make them commit full-time since they so "PRODUCTIVE"

since they claim to be leader and they keep highlighting "productivity"
they shall lead by showing productivity

reduce the number to 50 or less

return the jobs to the taxpayers

if not able to keep up, stop claiming part-time mp allowance, take the burden off the taxpayers and budget

MP Baey Yam Keng will be producing a play, titled The Cabinet, in July.

Despite a hectic schedule which includes a day job as a Account Director in Hill & Knowlton and his duties as a Member of Parliament, Baey still finds time to cater to his passion, theatre.

He has produced well-received productions, such as Want United People (Singapore Arts Festival 1998), Madam What's Next (Singapore Chinese Cultural Festival 2000) and Game Play (Huayi Festival 2007) with Singapore theatre company, The ETCeteras.

Click here to find out more!
Founded in 1996, The ETCeteras is the only Singapore theatre company that adheres to staging original works in the local arts scene.

The ETCeteras's 20th theatre production, The Cabinet, will run from July 21 to July 25 and July 28 to July 30, at The Chamber at The Arts House.

Produced by The ETCeteras in collaboration with The Arts House, The Cabinet is an original comedy about nagging obsessions and succession planning.

"This play may venture on grounds that people think are taboo areas in Singapore. The Cabinet does have an interesting premise. The audience can look forward to a cleverly witted script and a strong performance by some of the best actors in Singapore," said producer and founding president of The ETCeteras, Baey Yam Keng.

THIS IS PROOF OF THE FUNDAMENTAL BREACH...

THEY CLAIM THAT WE SHOULD PAY THEM HIGH AND OBSCENE PACKAGES IF NOT, THEY CAN MAKE SAME OR MORE IN PRIVATE SECTOR...

THEY THEN DECLARE IT AS "ALLOWANCES" AND WORK ONLY AS PART-TIME MPs
imagine how much jobs can be freed up and passed down to public if our PART-TIME MP COMMIT FULL TIME and stop hogging these appointments

having more than one appointment does not give one more than 24hrs a day...

so who did they neglect?
the taxpayers?
their own companies?
or the companies which they collecting directorship fees from?
it's a FUNDAMENTAL BREACH of their claim that they should be paid obscenely high packages as they might be getting it in private sector.
now they claim it as allowances, work as "PART-TIME MP" and still collecting $$$ all over the place...

UNIQUELY SINGAPORE???

http://www.temasekreview.com/2010/0...ores-economy-to-be-faster-better-and-cheaper/

PAP minister without portfolio and NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say now wants Singapore to develop a “cheaper, better and faster” economy after calling on Singapore workers to do so earlier.
He stressed that “there is a need for both employers and employees to embrace the productivity drive and remove bottlenecks” in order to achieve the noble objective.
Speaking to Channel News Asia, he added that “it’s important to track the progress of the ‘cheaper, better and faster’ initiative so that companies and unions keep moving up the improvement ladder.”
According to NTUC, such initiatives had led to the breaking of three key bottlenecks over the past five years such high dependency on overseas technical support, low machine productivity, and low labour productivity.
What was not mentioned is Singapore’s chronic dependence on cheap foreign workers who has resulted in its low labor productivity compared to other developed nations.
It is strange that while both companies and workers are exhorted to be “cheaper, better and faster”, the same rule does not apply to PAP ministers.
On the contrary, they are getting more and more expensive with an expected hefty pay hike this year thanks to the strong “rebound” of the Singapore economy.
Despite the ever-increasing salaries of PAP ministers and senior civil servants, it is debatable if they are getting “better and faster” at the same time.
Unfortunately, there is no way Singaporeans can remove non-performing ministers from the cabinet. Regardless of how they screw up, they will still be “voted” into Parliament somehow at the end of the day.

GDP= C+I+G+X. If govt keep borrowing, it can pump it up every year. Why we have not stated deficit spending is because CPF is a tax misnomered as savings, which is used through mechanical issuance of bonds.

MIW productivity drive is not new. In fact, they embarked on it since 1980 when it wanted to shift its economy from labor intensive to higher skilled work. 1990s productivity was poor due to Asian financial crisis that time. However, after 2000, it productivity was 1% per annum so I don't what came over MIW's head when they thought that bringing in another 1m FTrashes will solve the problem.
