Inzaghi left out of Milan UCL squad

Italian veteran striker Filippo Inzaghi has been left out of AC Milan's 25-man squad for the Champions League this season.

Inzaghi, 38, is the second-highest scorer in European club competitions with 70 goals, two behind Schalke's Raul.

He missed half of last season'shttp://lastseason.no/ campaign with a knee injury but returned to play in May.

"I hope that Filippo will in good condition in January to be included in the list then," said AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri.

"I spoke to him and he was disappointed but it's understandable."

Inzaghi was dropped along with injured midfielder Mathieu Flamini.

Milan are in Group H alongside Barcelona, Bate Borisov and FC Viktoria Plzen.

Massimiliano Allegri's list of absentees have only marginally improved since the weekend, but he still is forced to contend with a depleted squad. Nevertheless, Alessandro Nesta returns in defense and Massimo Ambrosini looks set to feature for the champions, after the veteran midfielder made a full recovery from his shoulder injury.

However, the same cannot be said for suspended Gennaro Gattuso and injured quartet Robinho, Alexandre Pato, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Mathieu Flamini, but there is slight hope for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who could feature in some capacity. A tactical change is also likely, as it seems that Stephan El Shaarawy will be dropped to accommodate the incoming Ambrosini, and see Aquilani pushed forward in a 4-3-2-1.

Milan's Brazil forward Alexandre Pato is out for a month with a thigh injury while Robinho (toe), Kevin-Prince Boateng (hip) and Philippe Mexès (knee) are also unavailable to coach Massimiliano Allegri. But Allegri is hopeful Zlatan Ibrahimovic will recover from a thigh problem in time. There is also a chance Daniele Bonera may also return, from a bruised rib.

For Pavel Urba's visiting outfit, they have only goalkeeper Roman Pavlik as its main injury worry, but the arrival of fellow shot-stopper Marek Cech during the summer seems to have softened the blow. Plzen are set to name an unchanged side from their 0-0 draw at the weekend against Ceske Budejovice, with a 4-2-3-1 system ready to be deployed that has also served them well during its qualifying campaign for the tournament over the summer.

Zenit will be looking at trying make history in Portugal when they welcome Porto. No Russian side have ever managed to beat a Portuguese one in European club competition, which is a remarkable statistic.
