SINGAPORE - As many as eight men, instead of the five previously suspected, are now said to have been involved in last week's brazen $600,000 robbery of a money changer in an open-air carpark.

This was revealed in court on Friday even as two Malaysians, Tachana Moorthy Peromal, 28 and Ravi Sandhira Sagaran, 27, became the second and third suspects to be charged over the Nov 5 incident at Block 110 Aljunied Crescent.

Together with other unknown persons and Singapore permanent resident Annudarai Raman, 42, who was charged last Saturday, they are said to have robbed money changer Ali Yousouf Saiboo, 35, around 12.53am that morning.

One or more of the men were allegedly armed with a crowbar and voluntarily caused hurt to their victim by kicking him in the stomach, according to court documents.

All three men will next appear in court on Nov 21, after District Judge Eddy Tham granted a police request that the men be remanded one more week to conduct further investigations. The time was needed to ascertain the identities of five other suspects in the case, the court heard.

Annudarai is represented by Mr Mathew Kurian, while the other two men are represented by Mr Sunil Sudheesan.

If convicted of committing robbery with hurt, the suspects face up to 20 years in jail and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Ex-clerks accused of causing Sikh board to lose $33k

Ian Poh The Straits Times Monday, Nov 17, 2014

20141107_robbery_sm_1.jpg

Two former clerks with the Central Sikh Gurdwara Board, which administers two temples here, were charged in court yesterday over some $33,000 in losses they allegedly caused for the board.

Malaysians Jasvinder Kaur Dhillon, 29, and Sanjeet Jasbirsingh Kaur, 34, are said to have committed 16 and 11 offences respectively, many involving the forging and cashing of cheques in the name of then president Karpal Singh.

Engaging in a conspiracy together, they also allegedly prepared a voucher for an internal audit that falsely stated a $1,879.20 payment had been made to a stationery supplier.

Except for the five forgery charges that Dhillon faces alone, involving almost $11,000, she and Kaur are believed to have acted together on 10 other occasions.

Twice, they allegedly submitted a false payment voucher and supporting documents so that Mr Karpal Singh and Mr Manjeet Singh, the then treasurer, would authorise the issuing of some $3,700 in cheques.

In 2010, between Aug 25 and Dec 23, Dhillon is also accused of forging and signing cheques amounting to $18,610.40 under Mr Karpal Singh's name, which Kaur allegedly went on to cash.

Dhillon told the court she intended to claim trial to the charges against her, while Kaur indicated she would plead guilty.

The women, both of whom are out on $40,000 bail, said they would be engaging counsel. They will next appear in court on Dec 5.

A spokesman for the board had previously told The Straits Times that the case came to light in January 2011, during a routine check on the board's accounts for 2010.

For each of the forgery charges against her, Dhillon faces up to 15 years in jail and a fine if convicted.

Kaur faces the same punishment for each count of using a forged cheque.

SINGAPORE - The first man to be charged over the brazen robbery of a money changer has been remanded in prison after failing to raise his $600,000 bail.

The court heard that permanent resident Annadurai Raman, 42, was no longer needed in police custody, though police objected to bail being granted because they said he was involved with a Malaysian syndicate.

However they proposed the $600,000 figure if the court decided to make an offer.

Annadurai, who is from Malaysia, is accused of of robbing money changer Ali Yousouf Saiboo, 35, of more than $600,000 at the car park of Block 110 Aljunied Crescent.

He is said to have committed the crime at around 12.50am on Nov 5, together with Tachana Moorthy Peromal, 28, and Ravi Sandhira Sagaran, 27.

Five other unidentified suspects remain at large.

Annadurai's case will next be mentioned on Dec 19, after District Judge Lim Tse Haw granted a request by police for a four-week adjournment to complete investigations into the two other men, who were each slapped with three additional charges on Thursday for separate instances of robbery and theft. They will next appear in court on Nov 27.

Defence counsel Louis Joseph asked for the same four-week postponement so he could make representations.

The penalty for robbery and voluntarily causing hurt in the process is a jail term of between five and 20 years, and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Those who commit robbery while armed with a deadly weapon face caning of at least 12 strokes, in addition to other punishments.
