By Khushwant Singh
IRFAN Ahmed Khan, 28, who was awaiting trial for drug trafficking, convinced a High Court judge to grant him two days' bail on Monday so as to solemnise his marriage with his pregnant girlfriend at the Registry of Muslim Marriages on Tuesday at 9am.
Elder brother Maqbool put up the $100,000 bail but Khan not only did not wed his fiancee, he also failed to surrender himself at 11am on Tuesday.
District Judge John Ng issued a warrant of arrest for Khan and ordered his elder brother to show cause on Sep 6 why the bail should not be forfeited.
Khan's trial for alleged trafficking of Ice, possession of another drug and of a knife was to have started on Tuesday. He is said to have committed these offences in March last year while on bail for offences that include abusing drugs and injuring a public servant. He was then ordered to be remanded.
Defence counsel Ramesh Tiwary told the court that the elder brother bailed Khan out at 2pm on Monday. The younger man then met his mother for lunch at Yishun before leaving at about 3.30pm to meet his girlfriend at her Toa Payoh home.
The couple then went to buy clothes for the wedding and returned to Yishun at 6.30pm. About half-an-hour later, he went into a mosque while his fiancee waiting outside for him. At 8pm, she grew worried and called the elder brother, who was unable to find Khan in the mosque when he arrived 15 minutes later.
Since then, Khan has not contacted anybody, said Mr Tiwary. The family believes Khan is not carrying a cell phone so they are unable to call him.
