Man jailed five years for cheating and forgery

A freelance car dealer who duped a Chinese national into believing that he could help her apply for permanent residency was sentenced to five years' corrective training on Wednesday for cheating and forgery.
Chan Teck Meng, 49, cheated Ms Fan Lizhu, 45, of a total of $78,750 between April and May this year, and fraudulently made false letters purportedly made and sent by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority.
A district court heard that the victim came to know Chan who frequented her daughter's food stall at Commonwealth Drive.
When she told him of her several failed attempts to apply for permanent residency, Chan decided to cheat her as he was in need of money.
