Man ill-treated daughter, jailed
By Elena Chong
A MAN forced his 13-year-old daughter's head to the ground, pulled her hair, punched her head and choked her for inviting her friend over to the flat. The 35-year-old was jailed for nine months on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to ill-treating his daughter at home in July last year. A Community Court heard that the accused, who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity, returned home from work that evening after taking two large cans of beer.
He drank some more at home. He then asked the girl, his middle child, if she had invited any of her friends home when no one was in. Scared, the victim started crying and said she had brought a friend home once. Enraged, the accused, who had forbidden her to invite friends over, forced her to kneel in front of him. While sitting on a chair, he pulled her hair, forced her head onto the floor, punched her twice on the head, and used his hands to strangulate her.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Edward Ti said the victim was crying throughout the assault, and gasped for air while being strangulated. He only let go when the victim fell flat on the floor in the midst of struggling. The accused had also ignored his wife's repeated pleas not to hurt the victim. She called the police. The victim suffered abrasions and bruises on the head and back. The accused could have been fined up to $4,000 or jailed for up to four years or to both under the Children and Young Persons Act.
