SINGAPORE - An unemployed man was charged in court yesterday with murdering an elderly woman at a lift in Choa Chu Kang.

No plea was taken from Muhammed Fazrie Mohammad Ridzuan, 22.

He is accused of murder by causing the death of Madam Lee Ping Yeng, 88, at the lift in Block 115, Teck Whye Lane, between 10.30am and 10.57am on April 12.

In a statement, police said they were alerted to a case in the block at 10.57am. The woman was found with head injuries in the ninth-floor lift lobby. She was taken to National University Hospital, where she died three days later.

Fazrie appeared in court clad in a black T-shirt and blue jeans.

The prosecution successfully applied for him to be remanded at Central Police Division for a week for investigation.

He will be back on Tuesday.

If convicted, he faces either death or life imprisonment. If he is sentenced to life, he is liable for caning.
