AN UNEMPLOYED man was charged in court on Thursday with armed robbery of $450,000 from a businessman at a hotel room in Marina Bay Sands last week.

No plea was taken from Octavius Tok Tien Howe, 37.

He is said to have robbed Mr Gay Choon Hooi with an accomplice, of the amount in the room at about 11pm on April 14, while each of them was armed with a knife.

The prosecution successfully applied for him to be remanded at Tanglin Police Division for a week with permission to take him out for investigation to trace the accomplice.

Tok had objected to the remand and denied committing any crime. He will be back in court on April 28.

If convicted of armed robbery, he can be jailed between three and 14 years, plus at least 12 strokes of the cane.

Application for discharge adjourned in armed robbery case
Published on Sep 23, 2011

By Elena Chong
A prosecutor on Friday applied for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal for a man accused of a $450,000 armed robbery at an integrated resort.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sanjiv Vaswani sought the order for Octavius Tok Tien How, 37, who has been charged with robbing Mr Gay Choon Hooi of $450,000 with an accomplice while the duo were each armed with a knife at Marina Bay Sands on April 14.

He said the prosecution was unable to proceed with the charge as investigation was still on-going and the accomplice was still at large.

Objecting to the application, Tok's lawyer, Mr Subhas Anandan, said the prosecution knew long ago that the accomplice was not in town.

A man accused of a $450,000 armed robbery at Marina Bay Sands was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on Wednesday.

Octavius Tok Tien Howe, 37, had been charged in April with robbing businessman Gay Choon Hooi, 46, of $450,000 at knifepoint with one Neo Ek Khiang at a hotel room in MBS on April 14 this year.

District Judge Eddy Tham who heard submissions from prosecution and defence granted said there was no improper motive on the prosecution. He found that the defence had not rebutted the presumption in favour of a discharge not amounting to an acquittal in this case.

Tok's lawyer Subhas Anandan had objected to the application.

He said that his client had been remanded for a considerable period of time, and that he had not been able to see the first information report. A copy of the report was furnished to him on Monday.
