A LOT of planning went into the heist at a jewellery shop in People's Park Complex in Chinatown, from where $300,000 worth of gold necklaces were stolen last Tuesday. The burglar allegedly arrived at Chung Hwa Jade & Jewellery at about 7am and successfully picked the locks of the shop's shutter doors.

Despite tripping the alarm, he already knew what he was after and made away with the loot in just two minutes without disturbing anything else on the premises.
He had used the keys found within the shop to open the wall glass cabinets that held the necklaces.

Knowing there would be closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras recording his every move, he wore a maroon-coloured cap and never looked up. He also kept the shop's lights off, finding his way by torchlight. 'He's not a novice at the art of breaking in,' said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Adrian Quek yesterday.

But one thing he had not taken into consideration were the eagle eyes of police officers. On Sunday, after a three-day manhunt involving 40 officers staking out locations such as MRT stations and bus interchanges, police nabbed a man wearing a maroon cap and carrying the same duffel bag used in the heist.
