SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for attempting to bribe two police officers last Friday.

Staff sergeant Noor Ramdan and Sergeant Mohammad Nazri responded to a case of a drunken passenger who refused to alight from a taxi at Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 at about 4.30am on July 10.

When the officers arrived, they found the intoxicated man sleeping inside the taxi. Police said he suddenly turned rowdy and insulted the officers with indecent hand gestures.

He also refused to heed their advice despite repeated warnings and was eventually placed under arrest for disorderly behaviour and for insulting public servants.

On the way back to the police station, the man offered to introduce the officers paid sexual services and gratification of $50 as inducements to let him go.

The officers rejected the bribes immediately and the man was subsequently arrested for attempting to bribe police officers, said the police in a statement on Sunday.

He will be charged in court on Monday for disorderly behaviour and indecent behaviour towards public servants. If found guilty, he may be fined up to $5,000 or jailed up to one year.

The case for attempting to bribe the police officers has been referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau for further investigation.
