SINGAPORE - A 67-year-old man has been arrested three hours after allegedly stealing a gold chain from a jewellery shop.

According a statement from the police, an employee at a jewellery shop along Bendemeer Road reported that a man had fled with an unpaid gold chain worth $5,000 from the shop on Feb 7, at 3.10pm. Preliminary investigations revealed that the male suspect had entered the shop on pretext of purchasing jewellery.

After establishing the identity of the man, officers from the Central Police Division searched the vicinity for him. The 67-year-old was spotted at Bendemeer Road at around 5.30pm.

He was promptly arrested and the gold chain was recovered. He had discarded the clothes worn during the offence and they were later retrieved for investigations.

If convicted, he faces a jail term up to seven years and shall also be liable for a fine.
