Language speed versus efficiency: Is faster better?
September 1, 2011, Linguistic Society of America

A recent study of the speech information rate of seven languages concludes that there is considerable variation in the speed at which languages are spoken, but much less variation in how efficiently languages communicate the same information. The study, "A cross-linguistic perspective on speech information rate," to be published in the September 2011 issue of the scholarly journal Language, is co-authored by Francois Pellegrino, Christophe Coupe, and Egidio Marsico.

As Dr. Pellegrino notes, "this result illustrates that several encoding strategies are possible. For instance, Spanish is characterized by a fast rate of low-information syllables, while Mandarin exhibits a slower syllabic rate with more informative syllables. In the end, their information rates are very similar (differing only by four percent)." Furthermore, Dr. Pellegrino concluded, "we discovered a strong relationship between the information density of the syllables and the complexity of their linguistic structure." Pellegrino and colleagues' result confirms the existence of distinct linguistic ways of packing information into syllables which eventually interact with the actual speech rate to result in a tendency toward a uniform information rate.

The origin of the speech regulation remains unclear and the team explores several hypotheses in the article involving cognitive or social factors for potential follow-on research. Whether this variation involves cognitive or social factors, it also affirms our appreciation for the richness of languages and their power of expression across different cultures and peoples.

Language Food for Thought:

Speech Tempo: What is the World's Fastest Language?

If you speak a foreign language, at some point you've probably been in that mildly embarrassing situation when you've had to ask somebody to speak either more slowly or more clearly. Then you may have wondered, "why do they speak so fast anyway?"

From my experience, it seems quite clear that most people (regardless of their mother tongue) believe at least one particular language to be spoken more quickly than their own. I imagine that part of this is due to the fact that when hearing a foreign language (especially when first learning it), your brain is working so hard that you barely have time to keep up, making the language feel really quick with a sensation that you're trying to keep thousands of different plates spinning at the same time.

How fast you speak a language is known as the speech tempo and, as I suggested, human perception of this phenomenon is largely subjective. However, there are ways to measure speech tempo, including measuring it as a rate of syllables over time, since the length of words varies wildly across languages. This measurement can be taken either with or without considering pauses in speech. It is known as speech rate when counting pauses and articulation rate when ignoring pauses.

An interesting study on this subject was published a few years ago, which found that the quickly spoken languages (of those studied) tend to contain less information per syllable. However, those spoken more slowly tend to contain more information per syllable. I've put the results into an interactive chart below so you can see for yourself.

A CROSS-LANGUAGE PERSPECTIVE ON SPEECH INFORMATION RATE

As you can see from the chart, languages with a low information density had a high syllabic rate, and vice versa. Mandarin was shown to contain the most information per syllable (since Vietnamese was a reference) while Japanese contained the least. In terms of speed, Japanese was the quickest and Mandarin the slowest.

Spanish was the fastest European language and German the slowest. Spanish also had the lowest information density of all European languages, while English had the highest. It seems to be that as humans, we all tend to deliver information at the same speed.

Which languages do you think sound like they're being spoken the fastest? Do you struggle with the speed of native speakers' speech for any languages you've learnt? Tell us about your experiences with speech tempo in the comments below.

Is this fast enough?

The problem is not with Bahasa, but with islam. Islam makes people stupid and unproductive.

Most of the japs and koreans speak poor or little English. They conduct business and learn science and math in their own languages. But that has not stopped them from being global economic powerhouses relying on their own people. South Korea is 1/3 Christian while Japan is about over 90% shinto buddhism. Hardly any muslims.

Religion does not make people fail or successful. If islam makes people stupid, how you explain Christian Africa, Venezuela, Columbia etc ... if its people are not smart enough even if you are blessed with oil e.g Saudi Arabia, Venezuela etc still unable to progress.

One can excel provided one's given the opportunities, dare accept changes n challenges. Never easy. Laziness n complacent will handicap one's success. Nothing to do with language or religion.

Bahasa has another problem that makes the mind very retard in arithmetic. 3 yellow cars is read in bahasa as kereta kuning tiga, literally car yellow three. The number appears very late and is very bad for math. I have heard Indonesians speak at very fast tempo, but then it is a different subject from language cognitive with arithmetic .

Mahathir will change Mudland for the better for Mudlanders, not necessarily for sinkapore. Sinkees need to adjust to the new reality or be always seeking to fight Mudland on everything (be like Israel).
No he won’t. How to change a country for the better for mudlanders by attacking neighbor country? The Johor mudlanders were already complaining fear of loss of their livelihood, not to even mention change for the better for them.

Inferior cultures with inferiority complexes usually refuse to acknowledge that their culture and the language are of no value whatsoever.

In NZ the Maori have this lame notion that preserving their language is the most important thing on earth. The reality is that nobody gives a shit about Te Reo (Maori language) which is so backward it does not even exist in written form.

If it disappeared tomorrow nobody would notice.

So which islamic societies are successful?

Freedom to join or leave religion, equal opportunities for both genders, peaceful, developed, high purchasing power of citizens, low crime, etc, things that we take for granted in the developed world.

On your question, there is no islamic society that is progressive. Also many religious societies. E.g. Catholic Philippines, Christian Latin America , Sabah Sarawak. Forget about Africa. Hindu India ... the list goes on. It is correlated with IQ and Race. Some race are more athletes and some races have higher IQ. It is a fact that we have to learn to admit. In denial will lead to nowhere. I played basketball for exercise and recreation. I will not become professional due to the facts that I will never be able to compete with blacks African. Only in Asian countries I can turn pro as I am better than them.

So any leader or person who wants a better future is better off not being a muslim. It's far better than being a muslim and trying to beat the odds, which a small minority succeed.

Also many religious societies. E.g. Catholic Philippines, Christian Latin America , Sabah Sarawak.

Some christian societies are doing badly, some are doing very well. So study them all and avoid making the mistakes that make certain christian countries poor.

I disagree. I prefer to link success of societies to their values and beliefs. More white people succeeded in the past when more of them believed in the Protestant Work Ethics. Same for East Asians, whose Confucian and Buddhist beliefs shared similarities to the Protestant Work Ethic.

There are more white losers today because a growing number of them have turned their backs on hard work and believe in their right to free handouts and excessive welfare, which is shared by most muslim societies such as the m&ds.

Affirmative action used as an euphemism for racial discrimination or favouritism;depending on whether one belongs to the "right" race!

Speaking English is the language of knowledge, does not make you less Malaysian, says Dr. M
By
Hana Otsuka
-
December 24, 2018

Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia’s Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad speaking at the Sultan Abdul Hamid Old Collegians Association (Sahoca) alumni dinner ceremony reminded his people to utilize the English language. He said that English is a language used by many countries making it a useful language for everyone.

Furthermore, basic foundational subjects such as science and mathematics are also taught in English, giving someone who has mastered the language an edge over others who don’t.

Dr. M’s speech also makes sure to reiterate the fact that speaking English does not mean one loses his native roots. A Malaysian will not become less Malay if he speaks English. It is only used to further enhance knowledge. He also said that there will be changes happening in the nation’s curriculum plans for schools making sure that it retains religious subjects while becoming more dynamic. It will be the goal of schools to mould well-rounded individuals, both religious and globally competitive.

In Dr. M’s words, “This means we should provide good education for them and they will graduate with a lot of knowledge in hand after they finish school, rather than become an individual full of drama.”

Malaysia as an English-speaking nation

According to the Education First (EF) English Proficiency Index of 2017, Malaysia is ranked 13th in the English language proficiency among nations of the world who are non-native speakers. This makes Malaysia second to Singapore who is ranked 5th out of 80 countries and falls under the “very high” category.

Malaysia, being a multicultural society, has made most Malaysians bilingual with a majority able to speak two of the following languages: Bahasa Malaysia (BM), English or Chinese dialect/Tamil. English has become a major language in the country because Malaysia used to be under the dominance of the British empire.

Today, many Malaysians still consider mastering English to be an advantage; thus, making Dr. M’s speech very timely and relative.

How about "Speak Chinese" LKY. We conquer China market yet?

IQ might play a role.

Economic powerhouses you say?

Any country with a big population is an economic powerhouse.

Tiong, Yankee, Japenis, even chow Ah Nehs. EU is a powerhouse. Even ASEAN or African Union are bigger economies than Korea. Not sure what this example is supposed to show.
