Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro has said he regrets a diplomatic incident on Wednesday in which two Indonesian marines wore the names of the two perpetrators of a 1965 Singapore bombing, while on duty at an international defense event in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The minister said the incident at the Jakarta International Defense Dialogue (JIDD), which prompted the Singaporean delegation to walk out of the talks, was inappropriate and he had ordered the Navy to fully investigate the embarrassing behavior of the two Indonesian marines involved.

“We have asked the Navy to investigate who they are and who sent them,” Purnomo said at the State Palace on Friday.

The two men posed as Usman bin Haji Muhammad Ali and Harun bin Said, the two Indonesian marines who were executed in 1968 for the deadly 1965 MacDonald House bombing in Singapore, during the period of Indonesia’s Konfrontasi (Confrontation) against the Federation of Malaysia — of which Singapore was a part.

The men, dressed in vintage uniforms and purple berets, with “Usman” and “Harun” on their chests, were seen at the defense exhibition during the JIDD, an international event attended by 45 countries, including Singapore.

Their presence attracted attention from visitors, many of whom posed with the two marines. The men reportedly looked confident about their behavior and seemed to enjoy the public attention.

Could this be the reason why Indonesia is doing this?

The House of Representatives brought up the issue of an extradition treaty with Singapore at the second general assembly of Southeast Asia Parliamentarians Against Corruption (SEAPAC) in Medan on Wednesday.

House Speaker Marzuki Ali said that such an extradition treaty was important for Indonesia because of the many corruption suspects who fled to Singapore not only in an attempt to escape justice but also to deposit their ill-gotten gains.

"We will push the subject of an extradition treaty with Singapore. This is important because we cannot extradite corruption suspects from Singapore as there is no legal umbrella," he said.

"Singapore wants the extradition treaty to be tied to a defence cooperation agreement (DCA) signed by both governments. The House rejects that agreement, however, because it is not favourable to Indonesia."

Marzuki, who is also the SEAPAC president, said that the House had rejected the DCA because Singapore wished to build a defence base in Sumatra. "The House views the clause as infringing the state's authority. The agreement must either be changed or separated [from the extradition proposal] because extradition and defence are two separate issues," he said.

Indonesians still think they are masters of their great Sri-Vijaya and Majapahit Kingdoms..... (including the island of Temasek)

Sad that Singapore students today have never heard of the Sri-Vijajya and Majapahit Empires and what it means to the Indon Psyche......

One day, one Indon President will call for a revival of these Empires and our "scholars-politicians" would be left in the dark.... as usual.......

Singapore has always been the bitch of a greater power. It was part of the Johor-Riau Sultanate, then a Straits Settlement of the British Empire.

Now, the little 'sovereign' state of Singapore is firmly allied with the Western powers, giving in to their every whims.

So what if Singapore gets re-absorbed into the Majapahit Empire?

.

Indonesia would get more money if it imposed capital gains taxes on investments. Many investors go in and out without paying a cent. They buy coal mines, banks, food companies etc, then exit at a profit.
