A young Chinese couple whose struggles to own a flat shed light on the country's economic downturn have captivated the nation.

Zhang Yiliang and his wife Dong Lijun, both in their 30s, have documented the last two years of their lives, starting with the moment they purchased the flat. Their account "Liangliang Lijun couple" has earned more than 400,000 followers on Douyin.

What began as a celebration eventually ran into trouble, including rows with the property developer who they said owed them money. In recent weeks, they alleged they were assaulted and had their videos censored, which gained them the sympathy of millions online.

Their experience as small-towners who had big-city dreams appears to have resonated with so many ordinary Chinese people - and mirrored their challenges and dashed hopes amid a property crisis in a sluggish economy.

"What you are posting is real life," a Douyin user wrote. "In fact, life is hard for most young people. It's not a party every night." Another comment, which was liked hundreds of times, read: "Their story resonates because they are just like us."

Some said their aspirations represented the so-called Chinese dream, a concept popularised by President Xi Jinping, which champions the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

"Liangliang and Lijun painted a visible model for the 'Chinese dream'," a former journalist said in a video on his social media channel. "This is to tell everyone, especially young people: The most diligent, law-abiding, and optimistic citizens do not deserve the Chinese Dream, let alone others. Thanks to the couple for helping us see the cruel side of China's reality."

The couple’s aspirations have come to represent the “Chinese dream,” a concept promoted President Xi Jinping, which aims to revitalize the nation. Their story has highlighted the harsh realities of China’s economic landscape and shattered the illusion that hardworking and optimistic citizens automatically deserve the Chinese dream.

Despite their setbacks, Zhang and Dong’s dedication to their flat remained unwavering. They constantly updated their followers on the progress of the construction and visited the site regularly. Along the way, they encountered financial problems with the developer, Sunac China Holdings Limited, and construction delays.

Their situation took a darker turn when they claimed to be physically assaulted during a live-streamed event hosted Sunac. The details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but the couple reported it to the police. The incident attracted significant attention on social media, with many expressing sympathy for the couple’s plight.

Moody’s Investors Service cut its outlook for Chinese sovereign bonds to negative, underscoring deepening global concerns about the level of debt in the world’s second-largest economy.

Moody’s lowered its outlook to negative from stable while retaining a long-term rating of A1 on the nation’s sovereign bonds, according to a statement. China’s usage of fiscal stimulus to support local governments and its spiraling property downturn is posing risks to the nation’s economy, the grader said.

Forest City: Inside Malaysia's Chinese-built 'ghost city'

Forest City was meant to house one million people - but only a handful of its units are occupied

"I managed to escape this place," Nazmi Hanafiah laughs, slightly nervously.
A year ago, the 30-year-old IT engineer moved to Forest City, a sprawling Chinese-built housing complex in Johor, on the tip of southern Malaysia. He rented a one-bedroom flat in a tower block overlooking the sea.
After six months, he'd had enough. He didn't want to continue living in what he calls "a ghost town".

"I didn't care about my deposit, I didn't care about the money. I just had to get out," he said. We had arranged to meet in the same tower block he used to live in.
"I'm getting goosebumps just being back", he said. "It's lonely around here - it's just you and your thoughts."

China's largest property developer Country Garden unveiled Forest City - a $100bn (£78.9bn) mega-project under the Belt and Road Initiative - in 2016.

At the time, the Chinese property boom was in full flow. Developers were borrowing colossal sums of money to build both home and abroad for middle-class buyers.
In Malaysia, Country Garden's plan was to build an eco-friendly metropolis featuring a golf course, waterpark, offices, bars and restaurants. The company said Forest City would eventually be home to nearly one million people.

Eight years on, it stands as a barren reminder that you do not need to be in China to feel the effects of its property crisis. Currently, only 15% of the entire project has been built and, according to recent estimates, just over 1% of the total development is occupied.

Why you keep mentioning PAP as compared to china?
If someone in PAP decides that they want to behaves like a communist party, Singapore will be doomed by this men action.

There's no guarantee that PAP will remain honest, if they hold too much power.

You buy a house to live in, not to 'flip' it, speculate or 'generate passive income'.

Unfortunately, many Kiyosaki cultists refuse to believe this. You can identify them on certain online communities, and offline meetup events.

As long as the Tiong govt is not going to do some meaningful action, the disease will remain and spread across the body like a cancer.
As long as Xi is in power. China is doomed.
Letting go of Evergrande is eventual, but this will leave Xi in great distress. Xi is throwing tantrum that he inherit this mess from previous action by his predecessors. But he also must know that the wealth accumulated now is also an action by his predecessor. If not, how he goes about throwing money for the project for one belt one road.
One of the ways is to let foreign investor comes in and restart the economy. Let the foreign investor has protection.Opening up all the economy and let western company has all the action. You can't try to make all the money and leave others high and dry.
